Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Jaime
Diana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Mi Cozumel unique concept was created back in 2018, named after a beautiful Mexican Island. The idea of a modern Mexican cuisine in Ohio and a place where you can transport yourself to our roots, where you can be your self and where the continuous entertaining & extra-ordinary creativity with our fabulous drinks & food motivated the family to travel around 32 states of Mexico to discover all the flavors & heritage in our gastronomy. We aim to celebrate the passion, inspiration & teach others about our culture with our handmade furniture, glassware, decorations… These were carefully selected & handcrafted from these Mexican states: Jalisco, Puebla, Oaxaca & Guanajuato.
Our unique concept was successfully accepted by Cincinnatians and outstate visitors, now with many followers on social media, many viral videos, many amazing interviews in local channels and super bowl commercials, we know that Cincinnati has hosted our family business with success.
Named “Best Mexican Restaurant of the North” for six consecutive years by Cincy Magazine, with a recognition of The State of Ohio for “Best Hispanic Business Fighting Spirit of the year” and “Best Hispanic Entrepreneur” by Gov Mike DeWine, selected one of the “Best bars and restaurants in Cincinnati” and “Best Margaritas 2024” by CityBeat. The hard work and our creativity pays off every year.
Proudly family owned and operated by a family of first generation immigrants from Guanajuato, Mexico.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No! It has been wow… Ups and downs. Specially at the beginning where nothing like us excited, with the exotic cocktails, the bright colors, the noisy restaurant and the eccentric vibe wasn’t yet viewed in Cincinnati. Taking a huge risk with our first location at the tri county mall with a place where the destiny wastn clear back then, we took the change and succeed since Ohians where waiting for a place like Mi Cozumel. Then… COVID happened and it turns out well on our behalf, since we were able to get out creativity to another level with the margaritas to-go, created many amazing and fun ways to have your margaritas with Las Vegas containers, colors, sparkles, candy, mini bottles, etc. We made COVID isolation a little bit more bearable. After covid, the rise of produce pricing and the lack of employees give us another challenge by the time. Thankfully we are hard-workers and were able tu run two restaurants with little amount of employees but with the support of all of our family making long shifts and openning our Oakley location with only family members (4 servers, 4 cooks, one manager). Wow! I remember all this and I my feet hurts! Anyways, times have improved but we are always exposed to challenges and to new government rules or ideals that we have to face every day. We born ready though.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a Mexican Restaurant our of this world, with over 40 flavors of margaritas, over 300 food items in our menu and over 90 specialty cocktails and mocktails
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Cant tell anymore, every year is unpredictable. The only think I can see if the technology will play an important role in our future as it is now.
