Check Out Danielle McCarthy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle McCarthy.

Hi Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started hand lettering 6 years ago, just for fun while I was watching TV over my holiday break. Since then, I’ve evolved into watercolor, acrylic paint, and now digital art! All of these crafts are self-taught with a lot of practice or by looking up different techniques on YouTube.

I currently create everything on my iPad using procreate and other tools. I love digital art because it allows me to explore different styles without the feeling of waste or the need to create something perfect and sale-ready. I have moved into producing much of my digital art, as you can see in my shop I currently have stickers and a 2023 wall calendar for sale as well as digital downloads that customers can print themselves.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are certainly struggles with any small business. It’s a struggle to compete in a marketplace full of wonderful artists and find my niche. It’s also a struggle to create artwork that can compete with the mass-produced world of home decor.

Doing craft fairs is a struggle for me to find unique and engaging ways to display my artwork, as well as engage with customers. It can be nerve-wracking, especially if you’re used to doing sales online! This is always something I need to keep improving on.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently am specializing in typography and line art. I have an entire calendar dedicated to the word “fuck” in all of its different forms. I created a unique color palette that is very feminine and explored all different typography styles to make the calendar different but has something for everyone.

This is the second calendar I’ve created and I’m quite proud of both of them. They are big undertakings to develop with 12 art prints for each month plus a front and back cover. I love to lean into my feminist rants and find quotes that make me feel angry or heated or loved and try to design based on that.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think inspiration is most important to my success. When I am feeling lost or uninspired, I tend to have a drought or slow period in my business. There are a few things that tend to bring me new inspiration so I try to remind myself of those as much as I can.

Pricing:

  • Calendar – $25
  • Digital Prints – $2
