Check Out Cameron Hooks’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Hooks.

Cameron Hooks

Hi Cameron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Music has always been an interest of mine, as far as I could remember. My dad had cases filled with CD’s and tape cassettes. He would play them on his sound system for hours, friends and family would come by and sit around just listening to the music having a great time. I became a fan of music specifically Rap & Hip-Hop. The culture behind it all just resonated with me on so many different levels I was completely consumed by the hard hitting bass and words of triumph and despair. I would personally get into doing my own music until the pandemic. I was always surrounded by talented individuals that chased their creative passion and talents, but it wasn’t until I was fully hands on in helping my friend produce a mixtape. Me and my two other friends would all meet at my apartment and just be there for hours helping craft this mixtape. One day we decided to have some fun and let the creative energy flow and they told me to write a verse for this song. I was nervous I hadn’t attempted to rap since I was 15 and it never ended well for me, I wouldn’t be able to finish the song or get the words to mesh properly. But, for some reasons on this day, a decade or so from then the words were flowing easily through me. I took it as a sign and challenged myself to always get better than my last song, better than my last verse, better than whatever I had just did. I felt I had found my calling and my passion and wanted to dive head first into it all

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Deciding to be a musical artist isn’t for the weak or weary. A lot of times your thought become you worst enemy, you can easily feel trapped, stagnant, you could feel like what you’re chasing is a waste of time. But, you have to know and believe none of these things are true. My journey hasn’t been perfect just like any other journey. I have had to chase artist down for feature that were already paid for, I’ve had to do gigs where there were 10 people in the crowd and they all have a blank stare of their face as you perform. I’ve experienced some real iffy situations, and I’ve only just begun. I know there are harder battles ahead. Knowing that though doesn’t discourage me because I know the payout and the self-satisfying reward is all worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make music, more specifically I rap. I see myself as a “self-taught mad-scientist”, I have no structure or rule of thumb to how I write, it’s a free forming prism of word-play, witty punchlines and sarcastic word play. You won’t get it on the first listen, but something in the song keeps calling you back. I’m most proud of how authentic I stay to myself and my experiences. I’m TubeSock Cam there isn’t another single artist nor persons walking this earth that is like me

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There’s been a lot of people in my corner that support me and my dreams, which is a blessing in itself. But some people got the extra mile; A huge shoutout to Niaja Smith she is my manager, creative director, friend, stylist she literally does it all, I couldn’t ask for a better helping hand. My team that I’ve surrounded myself with; DewSoCozy, Keem61 & T-13 keep me in a working mood and allow me to workout my imperfections and flaws as an artist. Those handful of people have 1000 percent helped with the development of my artistry. Oh I can’t forget my graphic designer London, he’s a huge reason why people listening to me now, he was the first one to suggest to me I needed to take this music serious. He makes the crazy graphics and is always down to work, hit him if you need a graphic.
