Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Erickson
Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in video production my whole career. It started with making terrible footage for YouTube, to working in live production for over 50,000 people, to traveling the world and filming series overseas (an thinking I was getting arrested in israel, that was interesting), back to Cincinnati and helping local brands build brand video content.
During all of this time, I was a huge podcast fanatic. I loved listening to shows like Against the Odds by Wondery, or How I Built This with Guy Raz. And the thing I kept running into, was almost all local podcasts didn’t use professional equipment, microphones or cameras. They just used their webcams and built in mics.
And I knew this needed to change. There needed to be a place that people could build their shows in a professional environment, and not have to worry about the technical aspects of producing a show. And, to top it all off, we know most businesses really need to have strong video marketing content to compete in the social media world we live in right now.
So, Brian and his partner Josh Lewis created the Cincinnati Podcast Studio. Built to help businesses go from zero to podcast effortlessly all the while, help them create video marketing content that can actually compete on social media.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No! It never is a smooth road in entrepreneurship. We started Cincinnati Podcast Studio about a year after getting laid off from my job, after the birth of my second child and moving to a new part of Cincinnati. It has never been an easy process.
The hardest thing to do is build a product that people actually want. You can see a gap in the market and build for that, but there may be a gap for a reason!
One of the things we quickly realized that was needed was not just the recording and editing of our shows, people want the strategy and distribution of their show taken care of as well.
So we had to restructure the way our business worked instead of being a service, to being a full service agency where the only thing people need to do is come in and talk on their show.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The cliché of the industry is I absolutely love telling stories. All of the video production I do is with real people, telling real stories, and helping brands connect with their audience. I’m not the sort of filmmaker to hire actors and write scripts, its all based on interviewing excited people about their exciting job!
Whether it was telling stories of the fall of Rome in the Pantheon or working with the local HVAC company to connect to their local market, they are all stories.
So podcasting was a natural outflow of my love for stories. It’s real people, sitting down and having a conversation about life and what they are learning.
One of the easiest ways to get to know someone you don’t know in person is to listen to a podcast they are on.
What matters most to you? Why?
My God and my Family.
I want to build a company that recognizes that business comes third, God and Family come first.
I don’t want to be the sort of entrepreneur that forsakes his faith and his family. And I don’t want to build a company that encourages that either.
