Today we’d like to introduce you to Atavia Bishop.
Hi Atavia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Well, I started graphic design back in 2013 at the University of Cincinnati. I began my journey as a fashion major, and the first thing we learned was graphic design. We were required to learn how to work in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I switched my major the following semester but I never deleted any of the apps. I continued to work on them for fun even though I was no longer a design major. I switched my major from Fashion Design to Marketing, to Communication. At one point I wanted to be a publicist but it just wasn’t my thing though I enjoyed the craft. When I graduated from the University of Cincinnati I completed a bachelor’s in Communication minor in PR, to my surprise I also completed the requirements for an associate degree in Graphic Communication. After completing my degrees, I moved to New York City and found a marketing job in the fashion industry. I also started a master’s program and studied Mass Media Arts and Journalism online, so I was working full-time and I was a full-time student. I then started freelancing doing various jobs in social media management and digital marketing. Most of them required me to have some design experience. I got a job at this fashion manufacturer where I was a Digital Marketing Coordinator but they mostly just wanted me to do graphic design for social media, websites, newsletters, etc. This inspired me to take a few free design classes all over NYC. If it was free, I was going! After completing that position, I was back to social media management but I so desperately missed being creative. Then covid hit, I was out of a job and I immediately started doing brand design for some people I knew in New York and Cleveland. I enjoyed working for myself because I can work from anywhere, from LA, from NY, from Cleveland, on vacation wherever! When I realized I had that freedom I never wanted to work a job again. Besides that, my educational and employment background made me highly educated in what my clients needed to successfully launch their businesses with proper branding. I love to help people and I love to see businesses succeed especially in the black community. My goal is to help minority and women-owned businesses launch brands that are in a position to succeed. I’m still building my social media presence but I try to use it as a tool for other millennial entrepreneurs, designers, and marketers to learn about why proper branding is needed and how it is useful for all businesses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! When you work for yourself, you have to learn balance. Balance in your everyday life, the balance between when it’s time to work and when it’s time to escape, the balance between when clients can contact you and when they cannot. It’s very easy to drive yourself crazy because everything is up to you, that’s a good and bad thing. You have to budget because you may have a million clients you working with this week but next week you could have 0. So, learning to save and budget was very important to me. Other than that, I had to learn to have confidence in myself and my craft. You won’t always get the support that you want and it can sometimes be discouraging but you can’t stop you just have to believe you’re killing it. You have to be your biggest fan, supporter, and critic. Personally, I didn’t feel much support from the people that I thought would but I get so much love from my clients, and that’s all that matters to me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So, I’m a graphic designer and I have a creative agency. Studio A is a digital creative agency specializing in brand design, content creation, and social media management for B2B and B2C brands. We work with clients across various industries, including fashion, beauty, food, media, eCommerce, and more. We combine creativity with crucial marketing and communication strategies to produce a superior digital brand experience. By developing strong and everlasting partnerships with our clients, informing them on key branding principles, and keeping them up to date on trends, we desire to build sustainable brands with eye-catching and harmonious visuals. I am known for making cool logos and people also love my mood board designs. What sets Studio A apart from other design agencies is we mix traditional branding with edginess, creating innovative brands that follow standard principles.
