We’re looking forward to introducing you to The Scally Brothers. Check out our conversation below.
The Scally, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minute of our day is:
1. Wake up and get into reading the Bible. For us, that’s the best way to center ourselves for the type of day we want – a day centered around Christ.
2. Get a quick workout in. Staying in top shape is so important for touring musicians. We put in long, physical days – so staying healthy and in shape is a must.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We are Jake & Zach Scally – better known as The Scally Brothers. We are a music duo from Toledo, Ohio. From an early age we developed a passion for our faith in Jesus and love of all things music. We have been touring nationally for over thirteen years.
We find the messages in our songs to be vital during the valleys of our lives. We want to inspire music that provides answers, comfort, and affirmation, while offering a constant reminder that we aren’t alone, even in our darkest hour.
Right now we are working on a lot of new music – we can’t wait for you to hear it! We are in the middle of finishing up our national tour, The Keep Hopin’ Summer Tour – which stops in nearly twenty-one cities and nine states across the US.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The two people who taught us the most about working hard is our parents, Charlie and Carol. They always taught us to put our best foot forward, to see the best in people, and to be an encouraging voice to those around us. Since hearing their messages from very early in our life until now, it has served us very well. Most of the time we work 24/7, nonstop, running on empty – or so it feels most of the time! That’s when we rely on our faith in God and ask Him to be our strength when we are weak.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If we could say one kind thing to our younger selves, it would be to never give up. While we’ve been doing music for the last thirteen years there have been a lot of ups and downs. But one thing that has been steadfast is our desire to grow in our faith, our desire to grow in our music, and our desire to never give up. To keep using forward and never give up. If we would’ve ever given up at any point in our journey, we would not be where we are today. And that’s only by God’s grace.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Something that we try to strive to be in all that we do, whether that be on social media or in person, is to be authentic. When someone isn’t real or isn’t telling the truth from their heart, you can feel it and you can see it. With us running a Christian ministry, we want people to see us off stage and on stage the same. We want to love people and serve people well – when the lights are on or off. We are all called to be the light of Christ in the world. So, something for us that we strive more than anything else is to be authentic and real.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story we hope people will tell about us when we are gone is that we put our faith in Jesus Christ. In our lives, we try to put all the pressure on ourselves. We try to have all the answers. We try to have it all together all the time, but in reality that’s just not true. We really don’t have all the answers, or have it together all the time on our own – that’s why we need Jesus. We need a savior. We are all broken.
But, there is someone who heals, has all the answers, and loves YOU. His name is Jesus. If you haven’t accepted the Lord into your life, now is a great time to do that. Ask the Holy Spirit to come and give you peace and understanding.
The legacy we want to leave behind as a band and as a ministry – is a legacy of loving Jesus – putting Christ first in our lives, every moment of it.
