Rising Stars: Meet Mike Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Williams.

Hi Mike, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey and introduction to music started in 3 different ways. When we look specifically at the saxophone; it started as a required instrument that I needed to play for 5th Grade Elementary Music Class. I wanted to be a Drummer; like my older brother and father. However, percussion was the first instrument slot to fill up. I ended up “settling” for the alto saxophone, after remembering I had an older cousin that played it. I played sax throughout Middle and High School; playing in the Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band.

In college, my musical career continued with joining the Falcon Marching Band at Bowling Green State University. After failing an audition for the Jazz Band; I decided to start my Smooth Jazz Band on campus. We serviced on-campus offices and departments; including the Career Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the College of Business. After graduating from BGSU; I continued to live in NW Ohio, and began to slowly build my musical resume’ within the area. I spent time playing with various groups and also with Solo opportunities as well!

Eventually, I became the Saxophonist for Indie Rock Band, Moths in the Attic. In addition; I began to become known as the National Anthem Saxophonist for Sporting Events on all Professional Levels within NW Ohio. My musical exposure continued as I recorded with Award Winning Blues Singer, Johnny Rawls, and began performing live with Toledo’s Legendary Singer, Ramona Collins. Performing various groups and ensembles; I’ve had the opportunity to open for Drake, Patti LaBelle, Gwen Stefani, Tyler Childers, The Vindys, and Helmet,

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been very rough pursuing music full-time. People often attempt to box me into one specific lane or genre of music. Also, it takes a lot of attempts before converting over leads for playing at new restaurants or establishments. Lastly as a Smooth Jazz Artist; people don’t always understand what it is that they like about what you do; so, one may be generalized or musically stereotyped. However, I have always used any of life’s rejections, as an opportunity to think outside of the box; and come back bigger and better than ever.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in event enhancement; through musical entertainment. With over 20 years of entertainment experience; it makes providing services for various events, a piece of cake. I also have DJ experience; which serves as a tremendously huge advantage when making song selections in real-time at the event. I am most proud of my ability to accept “Non-Traditional” opportunities. As an Independent Artist; there is a gradual push to join a larger label, and allow them to do all of the work for you. However, I take great pride in learning and understanding how to navigate within the music industry; from an in-house standpoint.

I believe in playing some events or spaces that are a bit awkward or not ones you’d typically expect a saxophone at.  All of these opportunities are allowing for increased levels of exposure and creativity. I am most proud to have recently delivered the National Anthem for the Cleveland Guardians MLB Baseball Team. It was a long journey that began 3 years; but with dedication, perseverance, and consistency, my dream finally came true. In the meantime; I have delivered the National Anthem on so many stages both huge and small.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the industry will move more towards a curiosity phase within the next 5-10 years. We are already witnessing it with the return of physical copies of music; especially in the increase of CD and LP sales. I think Gen Z will rebirth some of the pillars that the music industry was founded on.
