Today we’d like to introduce you to Govanna Covington.
Hi Govanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
It all started from my mom making chocolate-covered strawberries on sweetest day of 2015. I watched her dip the strawberries and pretzels in the chocolate; then I asked her if I could help too. I Made chocolate-covered strawberries, pretzels, and cupcakes and started selling them to my classmates at my high school.
One of my close friends asked me if I could put together a strawberry tray for a homegoing service. I took pictures of the chocolate-covered strawberry tray and shared it throughout my social media pages. A month later was Mother’s Day, and I created a Mother’s Day special that included the chocolate-covered strawberry tray. That was my first Mother’s Day creating special trays. I then had customers ask me if I could do treat packages for birthday parties, baby showers, graduation parties, and anniversary parties. So, one day I created a treat package menu that included chocolate-covered strawberries, pretzels, rice Krispy treats, cake pops, and Oreos.
So, I thought that since I was making treats for anniversary parties that I would want to learn how to make wedding cakes and birthday cakes as well. I started off making birthday cakes; first, I made cake slices before I sold my actual first whole cake order out the door.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a business owner, you’re going to have bumps in the road. And I have experienced many bumps. I learned from my mistakes, and those mistakes have made me a better business owner. I was comfortable making only chocolate-covered treats; I didn’t want to grow and learn how to make cakes all because I wasn’t used to making them. I was comfortable delivering small treats orders instead of delivering cakes. I didn’t want anything to change. I also learned that if I wanted to better my craft in my bakery business, I had to be consistent. I am the person that will never not want to learn; I’m always open to learning new things. I’m not perfect, and there’s always room for growth. I learned to not be comfortable with my business; if I’m comfortable, I’m not growing.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Tink Treats, we specialize in many options of extraordinary desserts, custom cakes, specialty cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate-covered pretzels, chocolate-covered oreos, and cake cicels. We work with birthday parties, weddings, graduation parties, business events, and or even if a customer has a sweet tooth. Our business sets out creativity within our baked goods.
I am very proud of the fact that I had decided to work at a bakery while Tink Treats was just my side hustle. While I was in high school, I was very lucky to be able to work at one of the best bakeries in town, Tiffany’s Bakery. Yes, I say that I’m lucky because the owners allowed me to work at their bakery for 3 years. I gained so much by working there, and it’s not just about what I learned; it’s about the friendships that had been built over the years. I was not confident with making cakes, and working at Tiffany’s Bakery allowed me to grow and become a better baker in all aspects, and I am very grateful for that.
What sets us apart from others is we create the vision that our customers trust us with and to leave them with absolutely jaw-dropping faces and smiles and excitement on their big special day. We offer many themes and custom designs that can be added on any baked goods, and they are edible.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are when my mom would decorate our house for birthday parties and family gatherings. Also, my grandma would have holidays at her home. I remember on my 10th birthday; my mom decorated our house with a Strawberry Shortcake theme. I had a vanilla cake with strawberry filling from a local bakery near my home. She made candy bags with different kinds of chocolate, suckers, and party favors. Each kid that attended would receive a candy bag. There were balloons, streamers, and decorated tablecloths that would match the theme of the cake. And now for my birthday or anyone special to me, I feel the need to go big with decorations, vegetable trays, finger foods, and even nice filling entrees for the guests. I want to continue the traditions of having family dinners on holidays with holiday decorations and family being there connecting with one another. One thing my grandma would never forget to make is her sweet potato pie, and I believe that I get all my baking skills from her. My grandma would want me to keep baking and continue family tradition.
