Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Owoyele.
Deborah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For many years, I have always struggled with severe eczema and hyperpigmentation all over my body which led to many sleepless and painful nights. I spent a lot of money seeing different specialists and also on many facial and body products with harsh chemicals, none of which helped with my skin issues. I never thought that my eczema could be so bad to the point that when it would flare up, I couldn’t move because my entire body was scaled and couldn’t go anywhere. Tending to my family or trying to give my kids a hug was always an agonizing pain.
I spent many late nights crying and upset telling myself my skin was the problem. I didn’t have any control over what was going on within my body, but I realized I can control what I put on my skin and what it could possibly do for my skin.
As we know, our skin is the largest organ in our body and what we put into our body gets absorbed into our bloodstream which ultimately affects the way our skin looks. I started to research and experiment with different natural ingredients and created products for my skin, and from there Ella J Naturals was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As much as I love making natural skincare products and the joy it brought during my struggle with eczema, it has not been easy to market online. It’s one thing to make the products, but it is a whole other ballpark to market them on social media. I do well when I do vending shows but when it comes to online, I truly struggle with that area.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Ella J Naturals is near and dear to my heart. I went through a really difficult time and to be honest, I really didn’t think I was going to make it.
I started this business because I wanted to highlight how eczema can be debilitating to your mental and physical health and what it looks like on the skin of people of color.
I aim to educate our clients and the public that despite the belief that skin conditions are skin deep, they can become disabilities to your mental wellness or ability to do everyday tasks.
I am dedicated to showing people with all skin types that their skin is never the problem. All skin colors are beautiful. Sometimes different skin types or “problem” skin can benefit from a different kind of love and exposure to more natural ingredients.
What makes you happy?
My family makes me happy because they are my motivation in everything that I do and want to do. When I went through my healing journey with my eczema, I don’t think I would have made it without them. They really took care of me from feeding, cooking getting me in and out of bed to cheering me up, especially on the days when I just didn’t have the will to do anything.
