Daily Inspiration: Meet Mary Kistner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Kistner. 

Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a stay-at-home mom to four kiddos. My husband works a lot, and I was looking for something to do. Something I could do from home, for fun, on my time. I needed an outlet after being a human jungle gym all day. Halloween was coming up, and I admire people’s “porch scapes” and told myself I was going to learn how to make doormats. After learning and coming up with some ideas, I executed and was invited to be a vendor at a private shopping event, and the rest is history! 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of my biggest struggles are brain block! I get on a roll of coming up with ideas and cranking them out, and then some days, I just stare at my computer. This first year has had its ups and downs, but the good times far outweigh the struggles. 

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make custom coir doormats. Besides just your holiday themes, I can come up with personalized ideas as well. Why sets me apart from others is your mat will be hand painted right here in Hilliard, oh with love. You aren’t just someone ordering a mat. I remember who you are! 

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Don’t be afraid to throw yourself out there. I personally do not have a mentor but do have an amazing network of friends I have made along the way. Go to shows and introduce yourself. Take business cards with you wherever you go, and don’t be afraid to hand them out. Get involved somehow with the city for local events. I was fortunate enough to find a core group of other small business owners who have introduced me to a plethora of other people. Someone always knows someone!
