Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Deininger.
Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’ve been baking since 2018 and started with box cake mix. I made a few cakes but realized quickly cupcakes were most fun for me. After I got comfortable with box mixes, I started making cupcake recipes from scratch. I never really did bake too many staple flavors; it was unique and fun stuff almost immediately.
I never dreamed of owning my own business. In 2020 a coworker and friend, Natalie, asked me to bake for her wedding in May 2021. I couldn’t believe I was getting this honor of being a part of her special day. April 2021 came around, and Natalie informed me I should bring business cards to the wedding. I told her I wasn’t a business and didn’t have cards. She lovingly said to “figure it out.” The rest is history!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a business is never a totally smooth road. I will admit, I have had very few hiccups and am very lucky for that. One big struggle was when I chose to rebrand the business.
I was originally known by another name but, over time, realized that name was boxing me in. I was in love with the brand, so even though I knew it was best to rebrand, it was quite the internal struggle.
I landed on Wicked Woman Bakery this year and the brand, with the help of some amazing friends, has come together amazingly. It is so much more cohesive and ‘me’ than the previous brand. Although it did hurt to let go, and was certainly a struggle to change everything, I decided it was necessary and best in order open my business up to more folks. While this was quite the bump in the road, it was totally worth it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Wicked Woman Bakery is a small business baking out of a shared commercial kitchen in Lakewood for events and custom orders.
I bake cupcakes, and I’ve started to bake savory muffins. My focus is to bring fun, new, and interesting flavors to my customers. While I do bake the staples, I just have to come up with some wacky cupcakes from time to time. My favorites are guava & cream cheese and poblano & apple.
I’m most proud of my flavors and creativity. Not every experiment works out and tastes great (ex. my Bloody Mary cupcakes). But overall, I’ve had a lot of success just trying different flavors and combinations. When I travel, I look for new and different ingredients to use in my cupcakes, always trying to bring something new to the Cleveland area.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
As young children, my grandfather would take my sister and me to Cedar Point. This was always the most fun and stands out to me for one particular reason. My grandfather, as long as I can remember, had been ill. He was always on oxygen and in & out of the hospital. But that didn’t stop him from making sure my sister and I had some of the best summers of our lives. This man would pack up two children, take them to the amusement park, wait in hours-long lines, only to stand on the sidelines and watch us ride the coasters. My grandpa was an incredibly selfless person and I think that is why this memory stands out to me so much.
