Community Highlights: Meet Rose Seeger of Green City Resources and KY Girl Hemp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Seeger.

Hi Rose, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Green City Resources in 2008, wanting to “green” the city with rooftop gardens. Growing up on our family farm I was able to take my lifetime agriculture background and put it with my engineering background to form for me, the perfect scenario; rooftop gardens. With every garden, our work progressed into more than just a green space, but into a healing space. Whether it is healing the environment or healing people, we knew our work was special. Working with so many hospitals and schools, I wanted to make sure I was optimizing every roof for its target audience, so I went through the Chicago Botanical gardens therapeutic garden design program. It was an eye-opener! Building gardens for cancer patients vs. a children’s garden vs. an urban agriculture garden each having special needs and purpose that makes for such satisfying work.

After many years working on our roofs, I started having trouble getting up ladders and staying out with our crew all day, so I turned to CBD to help me with aches and pains. It was a game changer; I knew I had to be involved with hemp! My friends and family started growing hemp, and KY Girl Hemp was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With Green City, the arena for building is normally in new construction on a large commercial scale; even though I understood weigh loads and agriculture, I didn’t know the ABCs of construction. I took construction courses at ACI and went through Turner’s school of construction management, OSHA safety, crane rigging, and signaling. This made us more appealing to the construction industry, and even though we are small, we are able to work on this large field.

Covid only shut Green City down for the first summer, hospitals and schools were on a lockdown, soon all of our gardens were getting weedy and needed attention. Luckily, we were deemed essential and allowed back in.

KY Girl Hemp didn’t fare as well; we had to close our Covington, Ky store, our Burlington store remains open, even though people still aren’t buying retail like they did before Covid. We set up at 3 farmers’ markets which keep us going; being outside is a great venue, and who doesn’t love a farmers’ market!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Green City Resources, LLC and KY Girl Hemp, LLC?
Green City Resources is a Cincinnati-based, woman-owned stormwater management company. Specializing in the design, installation, and maintenance of vegetated roofs, bioretention/raingardens, rainwater harvesting, healing gardens, and sustainable landscape. I think the extensive training and my background in agriculture helps set us apart from others. We love what we do, and it shows, it’s hard to say what we are most proud of; putting garden beds on schools to feed and teach children how to grow their own healthy food or helping patients heal. Having outdoor physical therapy areas that incorporate vegetables and plants, views of beautiful flowers instead of parking lots, eating the food you grow, all while cooling the building and absorbing stormwater. Who could ask for more! At KY Girl being able to offer CBD products that are safe and local has always been our goal. Yes, you can buy products just about anywhere these days, but something so important as putting a product in your body every day you should know where it is coming from.

Rose will be speaking at the Cities Alive conference in Philidelphia in October about “Oasis gardens in a trama setting”.

What makes you happy?
Water, trees, seeing new places

Water is always calming to me; whether it’s the beach or a lake, I love water.

On stressful days I can walk around California woods (right by my office) and get instant calming, but our roofs are very calming as well a good day on the roof helps the whole crew.
