Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosina Luca.
Hi Rosina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry. It all started with my cousin who I admired as a hairstylist. Then there was my brother, who decided he was going to cut hair for the wrestling team before meets in high school & now cuts hair professionally. Some things have always just come naturally to me such as envisioning a fresh haircut, haircolor, or makeup colors on others
I first started in the beauty industry in 1995 fresh out of beauty school, I took a position at a well-known spa in Cincinnati. I made my start as a nail technician, Esthetician/makeup artist, but my true passion was in hair.
Then I moved on to another spa and began my apprenticeship in hair. This taught me the basis for professionalism, learning how to consult with clients, and being a prompt hair stylist. I also continued to do freelance makeup with MAC cosmetics.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would definitely call the road I have been on very windy and far from smooth! I found my 20’s a very confusing time in life with broken promises from many in the industry and, at times, wasn’t paid for months of work. Being an apprentice for over a year at a young age was not easy, but I truly believe It is what gave me the education and guidance I needed to be successful today. Arrive early before your first client, LOOK professional (that means no athleisure or sloppy hair/makeup); after all, we are beauty models for clients; keep your work area clean, and always listen to your client; learning never ends, and from time-to-time mistakes will be made, but this how we all learn and what it takes to succeed.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I come from a line of beauty professionals in my Italian family. My family name, Luca, actually means bringer of light. It’s a reminder that “nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” This is why it’s my mission to help create strength, optimism, and beauty through my work and everyday interactions. Knowing the journey my father went through to come to America has made myself and my siblings extremely hard-working individuals. There are five hairstylists in the family yes five, and the number is growing! Definitely hair color has always come natural to me, but I enjoy seeing it finished with beautiful shapes in the right haircut that is right for each individual. I’ve always believed that just because something is a trend you don’t have to follow it if it’s not right for you! Maybe that’s a bit of the rebellious side to me, but I’ve never been much of a follower. I encourage others to do what makes them feel beautiful on the inside, and this will exude beauty on the outside. I also have a love for makeup and being able to enhance one’s beauty is like fitting the pieces of the beauty puzzle together. My love for makeup and putting colors started at a young age glamming friends for prom, bodybuilders for competitions, editorials, weddings, or simply a glamourous occasion.
I am continuing to grow in many ways to be the best version of myself. The beauty industry is so incredibly saturated and has changed over the years, but it is always going to evolve so I must evolve with it.
The pandemic helped me switch gears and really study my business and understand where I was going with my brand. I KNOW I have been put on this earth to empower others and uplift them. Authenticity is something most will tell you when they meet me that I am humble yet honest.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I recently visited Italy for the Davines World Wide Hair show with stylist from all over the world. I thought what better way to continue to better myself than to visit the place that originated the roots to my brand in the first place. Not only was I inspired to create fresh looks for clients, ignite my own passion, but to be the light in others & help them seek out their passions to create the best versions of themselves.
A little wine, Prosciutto, and parmesan with Italian bread is good for the soul. The Italians really understand the concept of enjoying the small things in life!
