Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Griggs.
Hi Savannah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
What started as a high school hobby for fun has quickly bloomed into something I could never imagine. I started making boxed cake mix just for fun to now making all my treats from scratch. It took a lot of sweat, tears, time and patience but I’m here and I plan to keep moving forward. I’m opening my first retail location this fall in downtown Akron, OH. I honestly still can’t believe it and I don’t want to spill too many details but I can’t wait to show the world what I e been working on.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Is the road to success ever smooth? Starting a business looks like fun and don’t get me wrong, it is but it’s A LOT of work. It’s a lot of commitments time-wise and financially, especially when you’re doing it all along. There’s a range of struggles in my field from; trying to perfect a recipe, trying to start creative and up to date on new trends and now as I’m getting closer to opening a retail location… the struggles have been finding the perfect spot, working with landlords and contractors and getting permits and city approval. It’s a lot but when you’re fully committed it’s worth the struggles and the pain.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now, I specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes. I would say I’m most known for my banana pudding and my strawberry crunch cake. What sets me apart is I’m open to trying new things, I love texting new recipes and I love being able to make things from scratch. My family has very little background in baking so it’s fun to see how far I’ve grown with no “previous experience or formal training”. It’s one of those things where it’s just in you!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Honestly, you have to talk to people is the easiest way to do it. Whether that’s going to conferences/ retreats for your field or even just talking to people in the grocery store. You never know who you might be talking to or who knows who that can help you. A closed mouth will never get fed! It’s also good to get involved with your city/ community. Go to local events, market days, etc. that’s really where you’ll meet the people that can and want to help you the most!
