Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen and Tom Markgraf. They share their story with us below:
Tom and Karen Markgraf are artists/sculptors currently working in the field of ceramics. They both received their BFA from The Columbus College of Art & Design. They have been creating artworks for over three decades showing them in galleries and placing works in collections worldwide. They have collectively formed Markgraf Clayworks LLC which sells art pottery and sculptures, as well as operates a teaching/learning ceramics studio located at the Newark Cultural Art Center on the square in Newark Ohio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Many obstacles faced on this road have been encountered by many creative businesses. The ups and downs of economic seas and cultural mass production at times devalue the handmade object. Keeping this aesthetic in the current consciousness through social media and relevant class offerings is one way they’ve approached this dilemma. It is a passion pursued with vigor and a love of sharing these skills that drive them on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Markgraf Clay’s works take a threefold approach to their art. 1 Art (This is the thinking part of each work… conceptualizing what the piece is to be “about”) 2 Design (The planning of the piece) and 3 Craft (Skills needed to produce a work of art flawlessly to match the concept). This approach is what they strive to teach and share with their students, thus driving the passion for clay. The excitement a student exhibits when they realize that they have exceeded their own expectations are the driving force behind the teaching studio.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Passion never gives up; it drives you on the journey. Exploration of new techniques and processes just simply fuels the creative fire. Learn every day in all things. Make it a habit.
