Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Rhodes.
Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Seeing the rise of content creators in the early 2000s really made me interested in the process of video creation. I learned editing on an old family PC and all I had access to was a super outdated program. It became something I really fell in love with. However, in life there are ups and downs. I’ve struggled with motivation due to both mental and physical health. Trying to stay consistent with my content became nearly impossible when my mother got sick and I had to quit everything entirely when she passed away. But my want to make her proud has driven me back to what I love to do. I started creating again, with the endless support of my friends, family, and my partner. My first viral video was of my cat Lydia and it propelled me forward to find my space on social media. Trying to keep up with ever-changing algorithms, interests, and trends can be very consuming but when I realized all I wanted to do was just relax and share my life, it became much easier. From there I started being reached out to by photographers and creators I truly admire. I started saying yes to the opportunities being presented to me and through that, I’ve made incredible friendships. They’ve taught me that not everything has to be a hit, and not everything has to go viral. Although it is very gratifying when it does. At the end of the day, all you have is yourself to answer to and if you’re creating something you’re proud of and you’re happy making, that’s the most important thing to take to heart.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very long and challenging journey. I don’t believe it gets easier; you just find ways to have as much fun as possible along the way. Me personally, I have a very hard time getting out of my own head. I’m my own biggest bully. My mental health is something that holds me back the most and I work to keep it in check but there are always going to be days when the depression wins, There’s no shame in that. But we have to remember to pick ourselves back up and keep moving forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think the best way to describe my content is just violently myself. I love making makeup and fashion content but I also love to just share my life. Sometimes I’ll attempt a new makeup trend and it’ll go horribly wrong and I like to share that because being extremely unpolished leaves so much space to improve. When it comes to what I’m most proud of, I think it’s my ability to bounce back. My most successful video series is about how I ruined my hair. It takes place over the course of a month and in that time, I gradually look worse and worse until the very end when I finally choose to shave my head. It’s a scary movie when so much of what I do online has to do with my appearance. It would have been easy to just shut down and disappear. This may be a terrible answer but what sets me apart from others is absolutely nothing. The internet is impossibly huge. There’s a space for everyone. I am very blessed that people find me entertaining or enjoyable because there are millions of creators out there who are doing the exact same thing as me. I love what I make and I just want to make people smile, laugh, and feel included.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
