Rising Stars: Meet Tanyqua Oliver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanyqua Oliver.

Hi Tanyqua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Gardenscaping began as a vision than a hobby then not only a regular reality but escape. Sweet T’s Thumb is how I decided to take my life back after being faced with all of the thoughts I had pushed to the back of my mind because it got too dark that quarantine gave me no choice but to figure out how to heal through as well as reclaim who I truly am; a sweet country woman from Central Kentucky that loves to serve but you can just call me T.

Landscaping, painting, and hardscaping as a whole has been a part of my upbringing but never once did, I think it would be my career. I had to decide between fresh manicured nails or good soil. I chose dirt and I’ve been thriving at my own pace ever since. Sweet T’s Thumb is not only providing financial stability in my personal life but also financial stability for a pilot program on the verge of breaking a hiatus that I founded and will continue to sponsor called ‘The Thrive Poetry Workshop’ that targets the trauma to prison pipeline targeting at-risk youth with the assistance of currently incarcerated adults. I am a multifaceted Artist and I take pride in everything I do. Very happy to hit our 2-year milestone this upcoming August.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, let’s just say I wasn’t afraid to fail and that was my key to success. I wasn’t afraid to be wrong or to learn. I finally wasn’t afraid of everything I knew I was capable of once I got through the molding and initial branding of my business. I keep hospitality on a pedestal and that has made all the difference as well when I have fallen short. Starting and running a business with Zero capital as a single mother is something I amaze myself on every time I think about it. Very happy to be the one in my family that decided to make the sacrifices necessary to elevate our entire family tree.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My favorite thing to do is Garden Bed Design, second is Faux painting. I also enjoy doing brick mailboxes, retaining walls, paver patios, deck staining, and Exterior Painting. I offer interior painting for repeat clients.

What sets me apart is the same thing that disables me. I’m an overthinking, over-giving, over-giving perfectionist. Sometimes I never know where to draw the line but it allows above me beyond what I’m requested to do.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the variations in land, scenery, preferences, styles, and people. I get all types of request and I enjoy catering to each individual client. What I don’t like is cicadas and the winter season. If I could, I wouldn’t even come outside in January or February.
