Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Gilchrist.
Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
If you were to ask most people who know me what I am interested in, they would say some variations of statements about data and music. I have even been given the nickname “Facts and Figures.” Even as a child I was obsessed with numbers, I grew up memorizing the stats on the back of my baseball cards. Also, while most kids were playing PlayStation or Xbox games, I would play business simulator games. One time, when I was 9 or 10 years old, I came storming into the living room, my dad asked me what was wrong and I apparently was upset that my company in this business simulator wasn’t making a profit. He proceeded to tell me that I need to go outside and be a normal kid. I took that love of numbers and natural business mind and have made a career of it. In college, I studied Health Sciences and have a Master’s in Healthcare Administration. I have spent most of my working career working with financial data for various healthcare organizations. I see day in and day out how data has transformed organizations in how care is provided. I have always been a huge music nerd. One of my main hobbies is attending concerts and I always have something playing on my speakers or have my headphones in. The past two years, I have been in the 98th percentile of listeners on Spotify. If my physical music collection listening were to be included, I would probably be an even higher percentile. In 2020, when the world was shut down and there was a lot more free time on everyone’s hands, the idea for Data Mosher came to be. While most people were glued to COVID news, being someone who worked in the healthcare industry and talking about COVID for 8 hours a day, the last thing I wanted to do once I logged off my computer was read more about COVID, this turned into YouTube rabbit holes watching videos about the music industry. Through these rabbit holes, I started wanting to see how I could combine my love of data with my love of music. Two years later, I now operate a business providing data analytics & data visualization services for various aspects of the music industry. Data Mosher is still in its infancy and is a side hustle for me, but with the connections made and the projects that I have been working on, I could see Data Mosher growing to a point where it will become a full-time endeavor.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say that it has always been a smooth road. I do struggle with a social disability that caused challenges as a child and also as an adult navigating a professional career, but I definitely feel grateful for the amount of success that I have had.
We’ve been impressed with Data Mosher, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Data Mosher is a company that provides financial & data analysis, data visualization, technology optimization & solution consulting for artists, band managers, and local small businesses.
A lot of data analytics and data visualization companies that exist are tailored towards medium to large companies. Data Mosher exists to work with artists or small businesses and is designed to scale up as they do. Services can be from as small as a one-time consultation to optimize current tools in use, to building out full-scale analytic tools to grow to the next level. It is never too early or too late to leverage data and data visualization to grow your business.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Wow! I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one moment. I would say attending baseball games with my family, being able to go to my grandfather’s printing shop and watch him run a business that he originally started in his basement and turned it into a 30+ employee business, or going to my first concert at the Odeon in Cleveland to see the Swedish rock band Blindside when I was 14.
