Daily Inspiration: Meet Hillary Sullivan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Sullivan.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2018 I had my first baby. I was working as a nurse at the time and leaving my baby for 13-14 hours was so hard! I ended up suffering a work-related injury and was off work for a few weeks. I had always had an interest in photography but didn’t know where to start. So, while I was off, I decided to offer some Christmas mini sessions. To my surprise they booked, all of them! I was so excited.

After Christmas minis I decided, I would start educating myself on newborn and family photography. I didn’t want to just take a picture. I wanted to tell a story. I didn’t want to capture the perfectly posed moments. I wanted to capture the messy and beautiful moments in between.

Looking back, I am so grateful that God used an injury to get me where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. It has been a lot of learning and adjusting. Along the way, I have experienced a pandemic, had another baby, and also all the normal growing pains of starting a business. It has been quite the adventure but I am glad I have stuck with it!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in family and newborn photography. I like to tell my clients I am not a photographer but a storyteller. I want to tell your story. The story of the season you’re in. I never expect your toddler to adjust to the camera I adjust to your toddler’s behavior and needs. If your newborn doesn’t like to be swaddled then let’s take the swaddle off and pose them differently. It’s all about being flexible.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Patience and flexibility.
