Rising Stars: Meet Denise B

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise B.

Hi Denise, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In Lovely Light Photography is a second career for me. I was a high school French teacher for many years, but when my oldest son was born, I left my job as a teacher to take care of him. I had always loved taking pictures but as my son grew, I was taking more and more pictures and decided I wanted to turn my camera to manual mode and learn how to really take pictures well. Eventually, I started taking pictures of other people and In Lovely Light Photography was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge for me has probably been learning to balance my pursuit of this art and the business with being a mom and now home-school teacher. I chose to stay home with my (now two) kids so I want to make sure they are a top priority, but I also love photographing people and creating art with them. This can be challenging, especially during the busy season! Strong boundaries have been very helpful. It’s hard to say no when someone contacts me to photograph them or their family members but keeping strong boundaries helps me avoid over-committing myself and avoid the burnout that I see all too often in this business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in photographing high school seniors and small families. Originally, I was photographing everything except weddings, but I found myself drawn to high school senior photography. Perhaps it was because I’ve spent much of my life with high school students when I taught high school French or perhaps it was because I love seeing young people relax and come out of their shells as I talk with them and photograph them. At the end of a session, it’s quite common for me to hear “That was so much fun!” from my clients. That makes me happy because I always have fun and my goal is that my seniors have fun, too!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I think we’ve all learned a lot through the past two years, haven’t we? One of the missions of my art has always been to capture God’s beauty in lovely light. I think focusing on what is lovely and good has been extra important over the past two years. I see the beauty that God put in each person I photograph and I hope to portray that well through the lens of my camera.
