Meet Skuff Micksun

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skuff Micksun.

Hi Skuff, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started playing music when I was thirteen. I bought my first guitar and started teaching myself how to play. I played in a lot of bands here In Cleveland until I was 19 when I decided to pursue music in Chicago. I dropped out of Columbia after one year. My teacher actually encouraged me to drop out, believe it or not. From there, I was pretty much all in. Music helped me get through the hardest times of my life. It was just something I did on a daily basis. All I knew was that NOT making music didn’t feel right. I spent about 6 years or so in Chicago playing in a band as well as writing for my solo project which would turn into Skuff Micksun. Back then, I went by Skuff. When My Dad, Mick, passed away in 2009, I added Micksun to honor him and that was when I started to find myself and my voice. I always loved writing in general, whether it was poetry, songs, short stories, etc, So, I really started focusing on my messages and the overall feeling of my music. And here we are! I have dedicated over half of my life to my craft and I’m happy to say that I’m enjoying it more than ever!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been through quite a bit since my teenage years. I think my biggest obstacle has been dealing with loss. Loss of friends due to drugs, freak accidents, or illness. The loss of my father and Grandmother was extremely difficult as well. The circle of life is inevitable, we know this, yet, it hits so hard when it happens. I think realizing how precious life is and how quickly it’s taken really pushed me to put it all out there. A lot of people I lost really believed in what I do and it lit a fire under me. I like to live harder for those people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have always felt the need to create since I can remember. I always loved drawing and painting. When I turned 18, I decided to become a tattoo artist to utilize my skills to try and make a living with my art. I’ve done a lot of murals and custom artwork throughout the years as well as album art for tons of artists! I just love the idea of creating a world of our own. I built sets in Chicago for a couple of years, which I loved, and have directed, edited, and built sets for a lot of my own music videos. I am very drawn to the DIY lifestyle. I just enjoy making something out of nothing really. I’ve molded my entire life around music and art and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. It’s my expression and my dream to connect with others who feel it. That’s what it’s all about for me

Any big plans?
I cannot wait to get back to playing shows! That’s the biggest thing I’m excited about because I have yet to perform a lot of the music I released during the pandemic so, moving forward, I’d love to get back to touring and I’m realllllyyyyy looking forward to dropping an album. Tons of new music ready to go and more being written as we speak along with music videos! I have some really great features I got to be a part of too but I have to keep those under wraps for the time being! Right now, it’s about making as much as possible and connecting with people who feel it.
