Hidden Gems: Meet Brittany Styles of Style House by Brittany

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Styles.

Hi Brittany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I can vividly remember being about nine years old and picking out the colors for my new room. I wanted it to be pink and green and spent several hours searching for the perfect comforter set and pastel pink wall color. During this time, wall stickers were very popular, so I had to have some of those as well. Pink and green polka-dots to be exact! Several years later, the night before my 13th birthday party, I was up all night creating my own party decorations. Out of everyone in my family I have always been the one most concerned with redecorating my room and spending large amounts of time selecting party themes.

I have always been very creative and always wanted to work in a creative space. However, during my childhood, I remember the topic of artists and designers being incredibly unpopular and viewed as more of a hobby. At the age of 18, prior to beginning college, I decided that I was going to pursue what made me happy and not allow the opinions of others to be a determining factor in my professional goals. I began my collegiate journey on a mission. I wanted to grow as a designer, develop business skills, and start a company. Style House by Brittany was born and with my newfound graphic design skills, my logo was created during my sophomore year of college.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly has not been a smooth road. Being in college is difficult. Working while in college is also very tough. Being a full-time college student, working, and launching a business most days felt impossible; some days it still does. Simply put, it is exhausting. The road of entrepreneurship can also be lonely. I remember feeling so misunderstood. I felt that no one saw what I was trying to accomplish and that they didn’t see “the vision”. I have felt doubt from the people who I wanted support from the most.

I remember realizing that people do not see the vision for my company because it wasn’t theirs to see. This dream is mine, it is my responsibility to nurture it and work for it. When I realized that I needed to believe in myself regardless of others, I realized that support comes in many ways. I have been blessed with the most amazing professors and an incredible mentor. My sister and best friend are also some of my biggest cheerleaders and their support means the world to me.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Most people who knew me as a child say that I was quiet and very creative. Something most people don’t know about me is that I was homeschooled my entire life except for one year. Being homeschooled was an amazing journey for me and there is nothing I would change about that experience. During my childhood, my dad had a job that required him to travel frequently. My sister and I would pack up our school work and hit the road with our family. I have traveled to over half of the U.S. and that certainly has greatly influenced my perspective and the way I see the world.

Traveling to many hotels has a lot to do with my love for hotel and resort design. I tend to style homes in ways that are clean-cut and pack a punch, such as a bold wallpaper, luxurious textiles, and stunning artwork much like hotels. I was influenced by many different spaces and cities growing up. This is an opportunity I am forever grateful my parents gave me as a child.
