Conversations with Molly Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Moore.

Hi Molly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started with making a fun little pair of sparkly shamrock earrings for St. Patrick’s Day 3 years ago. I handed them out to my friends and they loved them! 3 years later and thousands and thousands of pairs of earrings sold, my hobby turned into a fairly large and super fun side gig. I make all types of earrings for any occasion from the comfort of my own home!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m a stay-at-home mom of 3 very active boys. So, nothing is rarely smooth at my house. Juggling school schedules and sports activities always keeps me fairly busy. But I’ve managed to use my ‘quiet, kids are at school’ time as nothing but earring time. Along with everyone else on the planet, COVID didn’t really help things. My business basically came to a screeching halt in March 2020, but slowly but surely, I gained back momentum and I’m back to where I was prior to COVID but actually doing much better!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself a pretty crafty person. I love a good creative challenge. And I would consider the life of my small business to be a creative challenge. I was gifted a Cricut cutting machine by my mother-in-law years ago and it sat in my office for a long time. My creative juices were calling me one day and I wanted to see what it was all about. So, I learned how to use it. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and made lots of mistakes. But I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I am proud of how far I’ve come. I listen to what my customers want and take the challenges they give me head-on. My favorite part of what I do now is creating brand new styles based on customers’ wants. I rarely say no to any request! I started with faux leather dangle earrings and have broaden my horizons to such a wide variety of styles. Druzy studs, tortoiseshell acrylics, genuine leather, custom studs, and even some fun textures like fuzzy pompoms have made an appearance and are some of the types of earrings I can make. I am open to most any idea my customers give me. But I would say my specialty is designing and making custom earrings. Team names, sports moms, school spirit, corporate teams, Grandma’s nickname, you name it, I’ve made a pair of earrings for it. One of the more memorable orders I did was for someone who was traveling to celebrate their father’s World War 2 bomb group at a reunion. I made her a pair of studs with her father’s WWII insignia on it. Which was pretty amazing.

What are your plans for the future?
Well, towards the end of last year I took a big step and joined my local chamber of commerce. Since joining, I have done more ‘in-person’ events and have really loved doing them. I was in the corporate world for 13 years before staying home to be with my boys, but I also have a decade’s worth of social-selling/direct sales experience. I always loved connecting with people and doing these in-person events has been a great experience for me and for building my business. I am lucky to have customers from my first few companies stick with me all these years and are still customers of mine with my earring business. It doesn’t get any better than that. I’m signed up to do a few local Street Markets this summer and I can’t wait!
