Inspiring Conversations with Anthony Peto of Sewer Cleaning Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Peto.

Hi Anthony, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from Mayfield High School in 2001, I started my carpenter’s apprenticeship program. I finished the four-year program in just three years. In 2005, I was appointed to the position of Organizer for the Carpenters Union, with responsibilities spanning 27 counties. In 2007, I was recruited by Harvard University to take part in one of their longest-running fellowships, The Trade Union Program (TUP). After completing Harvard University’s TUP, I was appointed the Assistant Political Director of the Carpenters Union. In 2009, I became the Political Director of the Carpenters Union for the State of Ohio. In 2011, the Ohio Carpenters were merged with Indiana and Kentucky, and the Ohio executive board and the political department were eliminated.

As a result, I returned to my roots as a carpenter. I worked for a casework company for five years after that and hit a ceiling. I was unable to advance in the company any higher than the position I was at without obtaining ownership of the company. Around that time, I was introduced to a property management company that had a construction division. I took off the tool belt and entered into a sales role selling construction jobs. Less than a year later the company approached me to see if I would like to take the additional role of managing construction projects, along with sales. Burning the candle at both ends, I continued in both capacities until 2019, when I went to Southwest Texas for a long weekend on the ranch. This trip really inspired me to create my own destiny. I sat and talked for a long time with the owners of the ranch. Despite them all being younger than me, they had their own enterprises and a vast parcel of land. The conversation was inspiring and got me thinking. Despite my vast construction knowledge and several years’ experience, I felt that construction wasn’t the path for me. There were simply too many players in the game, and it felt like the end-user was never really happy. It felt like I was always chasing a dollar.

I started to contemplate common problems people experience, and, in two degrees of separation, that they probably know someone that has had a similar problem. What is something that you don’t call your dad, your brother, your uncle, or your friend for, you just call a professional? What is something that the equipment is just too expensive that the random person doesn’t have to fix the issue? Thus, the idea of hydro jetting sewers was born. Nearly everyone has experienced backups or knows someone who has. Upon calling their dad, brother, uncle, or friend for help, they often receive the same answer: call a sewer technician. The cost of a hydro jet is 20 times more expensive than an old-fashioned snake, so most people do not have hydro jets laying around. Hydro jets are not available to rent from tool rental companies. Hydro jetting is considered the most effective and efficient way to clean and clear a blocked drain. At that moment, the Sewer Cleaning Company was born. We have grown by leaps and bounds in only three short years of operation. We deliver fair and honest service to all our customers. We are transparent throughout the process, which builds trust with our clients. Most of the time we are dealing with people in a very fragile state; their home is backed up with sewage, and they’re just a little frantic about getting back to normal. We try to go above and beyond to make them feel calm and at ease while working on their issue. So far in life, I have had an amazing run; peaks and valleys alike have all brought great lessons learned. I am excited to cultivate Sewer Cleaning Company into a household name.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel no path to success is not met without challenges. This is what separates successful people and unsuccessful ones. The largest struggle I feel I endured was recovering from a corporate merger and being merged out of the corporation. When you devote your entire existence to a corporation’s mindset and goals. You lose sight of everything around you, like having tunnel vision. Then with a stroke of a pen, that mindset and goal are removed from you and everything that was normal had been undone, It’s devastating. The people that you worked with and knew as friends become acquaintances and then just old memories. Your ability to retool yourself from years of being in that environment for so long comes with endless internal questions about yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We understand when sewage is backing up in your basement, your toilets won’t flush, or a heavy rain floods your home, this is one of the most stressful experiences you will experience as a homeowner. With our state-of-the-art equipment and expertise in sewer cleaning, maintenance, repair, preventive care, and 24/7 emergency services, we quickly assess the situation and help solve the problem.

This is a rewarding job for us, and one we take pride in doing right. We educate the client at every step of the process as we address their problems. Because of that, our business has grown thanks to word-of-mouth referrals. Our work is based on a mission of providing service that is honest, transparent, and trustworthy. We do what we say we’re going to do. Period.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am Dyslexic, it is something I have struggled with my entire life. For the longest time, I have hidden it from everyone, embarrassed of it.
