Hidden Gems: Meet Dana Adams of Selah Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Adams.

Hi Dana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a stay at home wife and a mother of three daughters for 12 years. In 2004, with no real plan in mind I decided to go to Cosmetology school. While in school, I connected with a local hairdresser and began assisting her with her clientele. In 2005 right before my graduation she opened her first salon and upon graduation, I became a stylist there. I loved it, and learned so much there! I spent the next 12 and a half years there but I struggled to build my clientele and make a good income. In 2013, I found myself burned out, in excruciating pain from 2 herniated disc’s in my neck, I was in debt, and ready to quit. I was done! But I had no idea a miracle was on its way! In 2014 our esthetician moved out of state which opened the door for me to step into that role. I have always had an interest in skincare so I decided to spend the next few months taking classes and hands on training to learn esthiology. I became certified and added skincare to the services I offered at our salon. I began to pray about my future and God’s direction for my life and career, and then the miracle came! I “stumbled” upon a little 300 square foot space 5 minutes from my home. It was the answer to my prayer. I took the risk and made the leap, opening my very own tiny studio in the front office of a 1500 square foot warehouse unit that was being rented for storage by a plumber.

In one day, I made what I made in a week, in one week I made what I made in a month, and in three months I made what I had made in the last year at my previous employer. I made the most of that little place for a year and a half. Then another miracle happened. One day I was driving into Hamilton and passed an office space for rent. I called about it, scheduled an appointment to see it but then changed my mind. A few months later I passed it again, and it was still for rent. I called but the owner said it had been rented, so I just forgot about it. During this time, my landlord at the warehouse space told me if the plumber ever moved out, I would have to take the whole unit. I thought, “what was I going to do with 1500 square feet of dirty warehouse?” No, that was not going to happen. A few more months go by and I pass that office space again. Still for rent?! I couldn’t believe almost eight months after I first saw it, it was still for rent! So I called again. No answer. In the meantime, my landlord told me the plumber was moving and I had to take the whole unit which would triple my rent. So I immediately called about the office space again. This time the owner answered and said: “well it’s supposed to be rented but we gave them till THIS WEEKEND to commit. She said you are welcome to come look at it and if it suits you, we’ll move forward with you”. My husband and I looked at the unit, and it was perfect! The timing was miraculous. I signed the lease at 235 Buckeye St. and a month later, I opened the doors of my 640ish square foot private studio offering personalized one on one skin and hair services. My clients love my little private studio. I have enjoyed the journey, and I’m so thankful. I’m looking forward to the new and exciting things on the horizon for Selah Studio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Everyone has their struggles, and the journey has not been easy, but God has been faithful, and I am blessed.

What I love about our city? I love the revitalization. I love feeling a part of the community. I love the people, and their love for our city. I love the concerts, and festivals. I love the feel, and vibe of the city. I love all the little shops, and I love the beauty of Hamilton.

What I like least about our city? Parking. Parking is a real issue for business owners. Also, traffic and the trains can be a real headache.
