Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Jessica Headley of Wellness Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jessica Headley.

Dr. Headley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit I found myself wanting to do more as a professional counselor, counselor educator, advocate, and everyday person.

Right now, millions of individuals – our family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers – are impacted by mental health issues, with numbers on the rise. Depression continues to be one of the leading causes of disability, and among young people suicide is the second leading cause of death. Many experts have now pointed to the mounting negative effects of another pandemic that you may have experienced, or are currently experiencing yourself. Wondering what it is? It’s loneliness. And, what we know about loneliness is that it’s the opposite of togetherness, connection, and belonging.

Based on my own experiences as a clinician for the last 10 years, and decades of Harvard University research, the key to good health and happiness is growth-fostering relationships. With greater access to quality counseling services, more of these relationships can form, thereby creating an inspiring ripple across this new way of living that we are all experiencing together.

A spiritual tug, and the support and collaboration from my husband, Shaun, propelled me to focus efforts on opening a counseling and wellness practice in our community. Wellness Grove is located in Canton, Ohio and serves over 500 clients – and counting.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My struggles as President and CEO of Wellness Grove have been countless. But, on the bright side, they have been outnumbered by newfound strengths and resiliencies. Four stand out to me…

First, I learned to step outside of my clinician and academic comfort zones and into a business mindset. I had to actively challenge moments of feeling like a fraud and experiencing self-doubt (“imposter syndrome”).

Second, I learned about the power of relational leadership. Coming together with others who share the same vision has helped create the amazing team we have now.

Third, I have learned how to juggle many professional and personal balls, taking extra care of the glass balls and allowing the plastic ones to fall to the floor. They can always be picked up at a later time.

Finally, I have learned to fully embrace the skills that I share with my clients and to “trust the process,” especially during the most difficult times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our diverse team of clinicians are competent in working with a variety of mental health and wellness issues. Combined, we specialize in over 50 areas of counseling practice including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, substance use, and career development. When a client calls, our goal is to find the right match – not just an open time slot. Currently, we accept 25 insurance carriers with more on the way.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Among the 1 in 5 adults, and 1 in 2 adolescents, who experience a mental health issue only half will receive treatment.

Counseling makes a difference, and so can you by spreading the word about mental health and wellness.
