Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Johnson.
Hi Heather, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my blog as a hobby when I moved to Cincinnati from Iowa in 2010. I’ve worked in marketing and advertising for 25+ years. When I moved here – I didn’t know anybody and I lived alone – so I ate out a lot. I looked for other restaurant reviews as an idea of where to go. I realized I had a journalism degree and could do my own blog.
A lot of people ask where the name came from – I always called my friends “hussy* – no idea why. So then when I started my blog and needed a name – I just knew – Food Hussy!
Through the life of the blog – I added recipes here and there. Then in 2019, I moved to doing 100% recipes with a touch of travel blogging. I focus on copycat recipes from restaurants, air fryer recipes and Traeger recipes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As I decided to treat it as more of a job than a hobby – that’s when it all changed. It’s been a lot of work – trying to figure out my niche, improve my photography skills, market my blog and more. All this time – I was also working full time in marketing. So it was 40+ hours a week at the day job and 30+ hours a week on the side hustle. In July 2021, I decided to quit my day job and go full time on the blog. So now – there’s all new struggles! (haha) There’s always something new to learn and figure out to move your blog to the next level.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a food blogger at thefoodhussy.com which means I take a recipe from creation, to serving on the plate and then marketing to the masses. I have a background in advertising & marketing which helps and have been cooking since I could reach the stove.
In this line of work – you need to have a niche and narrow your focus – so I’ve created a nice space for myself with copycat restaurant recipes, air fryer recipes and Traeger (smoker) recipes.
What makes you happy?
My dogs are probably one of the biggest sources of joy in my life. But I just love spending time with them and my friends. Anything that makes me laugh is a source of happiness.
