Conversations with Carly Messmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Messmer.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew I wanted a creative job; I just never knew what the medium would be. Before finding flowers, I was an SEO consultant for a marketing agency in Charleston, SC. I got married in 2014 and did my own wedding flowers. It was my first time designing beyond a grocery store arrangement. I loved it and was instantly hooked. I was lucky enough to take classes and intern in Charleston and work on some gorgeous weddings. When my husband and I moved home to Cincinnati I launched Carly Messmer Floral Design. This is my fifth year in business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always challenges when working with a perishable product. Flowers can come in poorly, the wrong color, or not at all. Luckily the group of farmers and wholesalers I order from are incredible and can navigate any challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a floral designer that specializes in weddings. I’m known for a garden-style design and quality service. I really pride myself on both the business and design side of my business. I want my couples to feel comfortable and taken care of when they book my services. And I always want to deliver gorgeous florals best suited to their big day.

What makes you happy?
My family makes me the happiest. I have two sweet boys, Elliott and Thomas. And a great husband and partner, Adam. I’ve built my business around them- I work from home and I set my schedule based on how it best suits family time.
