Daily Inspiration: Meet Catherine Viox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Viox.

Hi Catherine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m a Cincinnati-based image maker & I’ve been located here my entire life. When I was young my dad always had is Canon AE-1 Program to document our adventures and it really taught me the importance of documentation. I took photo classes through high school and continued by education at the Art Academy of Cincinnati where I received by BFA. I currently work as a freelance photographer who dabbles in a bit of everything. My main focus is food/beverage & product but you’ll often see me capturing weddings, events, portraits, and live music.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been an easy path. I spent years working in studios for large companies on top of freelancing on the side and it really drained me. I was part of a mass layoff at the last company I was at and decided not to apply for any more 9-5 positions and wing it in the freelance realm. It’s not always easy, at all. I went from working a 9-5 to working an all-the-time but it’s worth it. I’ve gained a lot of debt and also a lot of knowledge trying to build a business from the ground up. At least the stress I carry is my own and not my bosses.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work as a freelance photographer. My favorite subject will always be food and beverage. I love getting the opportunity to capture spaces and tell the story of what they serve. Throughout the pandemic, I spent a lot of time focusing on promoting what various bars and restaurants were doing to survive and it taught me a lot about the industry as a whole.

Outside of food I spend a lot of time working with various brands to create product photos and social content. I also shoot a lot of portraits, events, and weddings. Hopefully, as Covid’s spread slows down I will be able to get back into capturing live music as well.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I spend a lot of time working with small brands and business owners to create images that reflect their brand while also trying to appeal to their target audience. Since the pandemic, I’ve already noticed a huge change in the need for professional images. More restaurants and bars need updated social images for new menus, brands refresh their logo and need shots to reflect such, etc. Social media is one of the main forms of advertising so making your business look visually appealing on the internet is becoming more and more important.
