Daily Inspiration: Meet Leah Harper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Harper.

Hi Leah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I always wanted to act since I was young, but I really didn’t get started in it seriously until after college. I was focused in fine arts and music in the beginning of my life, realism and classical piano to be specific. I was majoring in classical piano and performance and solo work in college and slowly discovered that this may not be something I wanted to do anymore. Honestly, the change was extremely scary. Piano was very comfortable for me, very familiar for me and I didn’t wanna leave it, but it was time.
At this transition, I ended up stumbling into an acting school, which is something I had always wanted to do since I was young, act on stage with other actors, how amazing. I decided to try a class out and within the first month I had signed up for 17 classes a week for the entire year. I am a little bit of an extremist and when I find something I like, I tend to dive headfirst into it. I fell in love with acting , and that’s where I am today. Now I’m working professionally in the Acting world with representation, Heyman Talent and Talent Group, countless onset experiences, studied and worked with some wonderful teachers, actors and role models, and I’m still always learning. I’m so grateful to be where I am today and I am so happy to be with the amazing teams of people that are around me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have been very fortunate in the acting world so far, and this is what I have learned from it. It is so important to stay focused, and move forward. It’s a simple as that. There are many times you will be right for the role and there will be times where you will be wrong for the role, but you have to keep moving forward. The only way that you will fail is if you stop, so just don’t stop.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actress, that specializes in Meisner technique, which is all about living in true emotion with imaginary circumstances. I would say that I am most known for working in the commercial world and giving back to my acting school that I started at, the Houde School Of Acting; practices/scenes of mine and classmates are online if you want to see what we work on at the school.
I love going emotionally deep with a character and to bring a scene to life is wonderful. It’s what I strive to do every time I work.

I think I am most proud of, at this time, is trying to get to know myself inside and out. Over several years, I have faced many of the things that made me uncomfortable, and many of the people that I believed did me wrong, and really hear them out. Today, I feel stronger, and more whole, and know myself better than I ever had before because of it.

I work very hard, and I work very hard because I love what I do. I study every day, whether that’s reading or studying scenes or studying people in everyday life. I love behavior, and I love emotion. I find it fascinating. I have always been a focused study since I was young. I started in classical piano at the age of four and my mother couldn’t get me off the piano. I would practice for seven hours without interruption because I loved it. That translated into my craft today of Acting. I love it and I just can’t stop.

What matters most to you?
Follow your wants, dreams, hopes, and desires and know there truly are no limits. Yeah, I know that kind of sounds corny, but it’s something I truly believe to my core.
I think following your ambitions matters so much within someone’s life. You get to discover how strong you are, how creative you are, how loving you are, how cunning you are, and you get to know you. Striving for what you really want, what you truly want is a journey of twists and turns and unexpected falls, but you can do so much more than you think. All you have to do is believe in yourself.

Maybe at the heart of what I’m saying is what matters most to me is believing in yourself, and why is that so important, so you can be the strongest most kick butt person you can be.
