Rising Stars: Meet Ben Teters of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Teters.

Hi Ben, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
SunDub is a multiracial, multigenerational, family-rooted reggae collective led by powerhouse vocalist Joanna Teters, whose smoky delivery rides over the band’s airtight rhythm section. Formed in 2013, the New York City–based group blends deep roots reggae with soul influences, delivering uplifting grooves and songs centered on social justice, resistance, and spirituality. Anchored by a core lineup of Finnegan Singer (guitar), Jose Lopez (guitar), Derrick Bourne (bass), Sidney Mills (vocals/keys formally of Steel Pulse), and siblings Joanna Teters (lead vocals) and Ben Teters (vocals/drums), SunDub has built a reputation for powerful live performances and collaborative recordings. Their three albums—Burden of Love (2019), Spirits Eat Music (2022), Brooklyn Riddim (2025), and Shoot Your Arrow (2026) —have reached millions of listeners worldwide. The band has collaborated with reggae luminaries including Peetah Morgan, Lutan Fyah, Sister Nancy, Easy Star All-Stars, Mike Love, HIRIE, Cas Haley, Dean Fraser, Earl “Chinna” Smith, Scientist, Mo’Kalamity, and The Meditations, bringing a modern voice to reggae’s timeless pulse. As Daily Reggae wrote, Joanna Teters is “one of the best vocalists in reggae today.” Their new studio album Shoot Your Arrow was released in May 2026 via Easy Star Records.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As always with building a business, there are struggles along the way. With the current landscape of music being devalued because of streaming platforms, our main challenge has been how to provide value to our fans beyond the value of our recorded music. We have turned to special fan experiences that during our tours, vip meet and greets, limited merch drops, and as much direct to fan interaction as possible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a reggae band that fuses traditional roots reggae with RnB and soul influences. We are known for our tight live band performances and arrangements. We are most proud of our four studio records, Burden of Love, Spirits Eat Music, Brooklyn Riddim, and Shoot Your Arrow. One of the things that sets us apart is that we are a female-fronted, multi-racial band with members spanning from age 34 to 65.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Providing encouragement by way of positive and clear lyrics for people to tap into and feel uplifted by is always a priority for SunDub. In these divided and dark times we’re living in, to pour forth good energy and help to manifest connection and hope seems like my most important role as an artist.
