Today we’d like to introduce you to Aja Nicole.
Hi Aja , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi! Well ever since I was a little girl, I was always drawn to performing and creating. I always wanted to be the people I saw on TV! I started really pursuing it when I became a freelance model and actress spending several years making connections, working on print shoots, walking in local runway shows and acting in local film projects. I fell in love with the grind along with the craft.
As I gained more experience, I started signing with agencies and more opportunities opened up. I began working on commercials, music videos, voice-over projects, bigger print shoots and more film projects. Along the way, I also started creating more and collaborating behind the scenes as well. From writing to directing on projects. Which gave me a deeper appreciation and love for storytelling and art itself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whew, no absolutely not lol! There’s times where you’ll be booked and working consistently. Then there’s times where you’ll audition/submit constantly but won’t work for a bit. Or you may have a callback(s), booking, or time on hold for a project but then be dropped. The industry can be very unpredictable at times. But you have to look at it as a marathon and not a race. Sometimes you just have to remind yourself to put one foot in front of the other and keep going.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I’m an actress but I also like to say I’m a creative and an artist. I work on a lot of projects but I love specifically pursuing projects that challenge me. Whether it be exploring the complex and messy parts of being human in a story, or even comedic roles (that can be surprisingly challenging) especially when it comes to delivery and comedic timing.
I feel my proudest when someone sees my work and it either makes them laugh or touches them in some way. That’s the beauty of this industry that makes my heart full!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Definitely resilience for one. You have to get used to hearing the word ‘no’ and realize it’s not personal but apart of the process. The journey through this career is not always the smoothest but you have to shake off the rough moments, or take a pause and keep moving forward.
Another one is empathy. Especially when it comes to connecting to the characters you play and the stories you tell. Understanding them, even the ones people might deem deeply flawed. When you approach the character/story with empathy, the performance becomes honest and can speak to people.
