Life & Work with Jay McFarland of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay McFarland.

Hi Jay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My photography journey began in 2017 after the birth of my daughter. Wanting to capture those special moments, I realized that the camera on my phone simply wasn’t producing the quality I wanted, so I invested in a used Nikon D700 professional camera for about $300. What started as a desire to preserve memories quickly turned into a passion for photography. I spent countless hours learning, practicing, and photographing scenes around the city, sharing my work on social media. In 2019, I photographed my first clients, and with the encouragement and support of friends, family, and followers who believed in my work, my business began to grow. Over the years, that passion has developed into the thriving photography business it is today, allowing me to help others preserve their own memories while doing something I truly love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey certainly hasn’t been smooth. Turning a passion for photography into a full-time professional portrait business comes with plenty of challenges. From equipment failures and learning how to price services properly to figuring out effective marketing and advertising strategies, there have been many obstacles along the way. Running a successful business requires much more than taking great photos, and there are countless factors that can slow or even derail your progress if you don’t approach them with careful planning and a willingness to adapt. Each challenge, however, has provided valuable lessons that have helped shape and strengthen the business over time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography, creating images that help individuals, couples, and families preserve meaningful moments and tell their stories. Over the years, I’ve become known for my creative style, particularly the rich colors, contrast, and polished look that define my work. I believe that every image should feel intentional and timeless.

What truly sets me apart is my attention to detail. From lighting and posing to editing and the overall client experience, I focus on the small things that can make a big difference in the final product. I strive to create portraits that not only look beautiful but also reflect the personality and uniqueness of the people in front of the camera.

More than any single photograph or accomplishment, I’m most proud of the growth I’ve experienced—both as a photographer and as a business owner. Looking back at where I started and seeing how far I’ve come through continuous learning, perseverance, and the support of my clients, family, and community is something I take great pride in. I believe there’s always room to improve, and that commitment to growth is what continues to drive me forward.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
