Life & Work with Dan Barker of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Barker.

Dan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in a small town in western New York and have always been someone who enjoys learning through hands-on experience and I’ve always had a passion for music. I’ve faced many challenges and setbacks, but they’ve helped me grow into who I am. I’m focused on building a positive future, continuing to learn new skills, and creating the life I have always wanted by chasing my dreams. I’m excited for new opportunities and always looking for ways to improve myself and contribute to those around me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To say the road hasn’t been smooth would be a massive understatement. At 29 years old, I have lived through a lifetime of extremes. I am a recovering addict and a musician, but above all, I am a survivor. My journey has included overcoming severe mental health struggles, surviving multiple suicide attempts and near-fatal drug overdoses, living through house fires, and literally surviving being hit by a truck that shattered my skull.

Every single one of those moments could have been the end of my story. Instead, rebuilding my mind, body, and life from scratch has given me a perspective that most people never have to find. Music became my lifeline, and the fact that I am still here to create it is proof that my purpose wasn’t finished

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I started making hip-hop at 14 after my house burned down, picked up a guitar at 21 and wrote my first acoustic album.

Since then I mainly focus on guitar but I haven’t stopped making hip-hop either.

I would say im known for being sparatic because you never know what you are going to get from me whether it be hip-hop, singer songwriter, punk, reggae, alternative, emo, folk, rock or straight psychedelic jam

I just have a love for all music and am dedicated to constantly creating and putting on a good show

I play in multiple bands, have toured the country and been able to play with all of my favorite musicians at some amazing venues.

Im most proud of the fact that I have kept going throughout it all and been able to make this my life

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
