Today we’d like to introduce you to E’lele.
Hi e’lele, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I lost a bet to a friend and that forced me to join choir in middle school. Now I am an award winning and nominated vocalist in the state of Hawaii where I live, and enjoy the tour circuit of the Midwest and the west coast every year.
My family gathered often and shared meals and played music together. I learned Piano and a little guitar and some bass guitar since the age of five. Both sides of my family are very musical and one of my grandfathers played violin in the state symphony
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think for Musician’s no matter how much you achieve there’s always another level.
To be a Successful musician, it is very much who you know and not how talented you are. This has made it a difficult journey, especially being a woman in the music industry.
I remember many times male sound engineers would completely ignore me. other male musicians would cut me off, unplugged me or make sexist comments.
I remember being hired on that one particular venue who loved my music and talked often about projects in the future we could collaborate on. And then a long came another Musician who got a job at this music venue and started partying and hanging out with the owner and next thing I knew he was getting the prime spots that I was promised. So things can definitely get unfair. This industry can be a lot about hiring your friends and not who actually is talented and deserves it.
It’s only after I joined the medicine music circuit that I found more peaceful people to be around and now my job is a lot easier and more fun because I’m surrounded with compassionate people who are intelligent and have integrity
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an unsigned, uncensored, original music artist.
I make my living, mostly playing live shows of my original music. Often times I play traditional Hawaiian music & island reggae at small gigs like special events, private parties and corporate events.
I also do a lot of studio work and sing on other people‘s projects as well as teach vocal coaching and direct Womens Chorus.
Progressing into moving my musical business more online to a website called stageit.com where I can live stream shows from my living room.
Also steadily increasing the number of streams my music receives online and that generates a nice passive income for me.
My original music has messages in it that promote sovereignty and community organization as well as self healing. This kind of music opens a lot of doors for me because people feel really good when they sing along to songs that are meant to promote a higher vibration of being.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think being a musician is a huge risk because income is not always guaranteed. Also, the way the messages in my original music are received. Some people have felt very triggered when I talk about sovereignty. I also talk about the centralized banking system and how money is backed by nothing anymore. I also promote trading amongst each other to take money out of the equation altogether. This is a huge risk to talk about this in a world where paper money has so much value still.
