Conversations with Clayton Stark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Stark.

Hi Clayton, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Northwest Ohio and have been around hunting dogs and the outdoors my entire life. My family has been involved with coonhounds for four generations, spanning more than 130 years, so this lifestyle was never something I picked up later in life, it was simply how I was raised. Some of my earliest memories are following hounds through the woods with my dad and uncles, learning lessons that had very little to do with hunting and everything to do with work ethic, responsibility, patience, and family tradition. Professionally, I took a different path at first. I earned my degree in Education and spent 15 years coaching multiple sports. During that time I continued hunting, training dogs, and sharing my experiences online as a hobby. What started as a way to document hunts and preserve memories gradually grew into something much larger. People connected with the authenticity of the content, the family traditions behind it, and the practical training information I was sharing. Today, I am happily married and the proud father of two boys and two girls. My family is at the center of everything I do, and many of the values I try to share through my work are the same values I hope to pass on to my children. Watching them experience the outdoors and develop a love for the traditions that shaped my own life has become one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. Over time, Stark Outdoors evolved into a full time outdoor media brand. Today I create content focused on coonhounds, squirrel dogs, hunting, traditional archery, outdoor skills, and family traditions. Across social media platforms, YouTube, and Patreon, I have the opportunity to reach milllions of people and help introduce new generations to activities that have played such an important role in my own life. What I am most proud of is that despite the growth, the mission has never really changed. Whether I am filming a hunt, teaching someone how to train a puppy, or sharing a story from the woods with my kids, my goal is still the same, to preserve traditions that matter, help others enjoy the outdoors, and pass along knowledge that was passed down to me by the generations before me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no. Like anyone who has been fortunate enough to achieve a dream, there has been a tremendous amount of hard work and sacrifice along the way. For years, I spent countless weekends traveling across the country with very little sleep, filming hunts, creating content, and helping promote others, often for little to no pay. There were a lot of long nights, early mornings, missed comforts, and periods where I was investing far more time and energy than I was getting back financially. Building something from the ground up requires a level of commitment that most people never see behind the scenes. At the same time, I have been fortunate to build a career doing something I genuinely love. The outdoors, hunting dogs, and sharing those experiences with others have always been passions of mine, so even during the difficult seasons I never lost sight of why I started. Like everyone else, life has also brought its share of personal challenges. Over the years I have lost family members and people who played important roles in my life. Those experiences have a way of changing your perspective and reminding you that success is not measured solely by numbers or accomplishments, but by the impact you have on others and the time you spend with the people you love. Looking back, I would not describe the road as smooth, but I would say every challenge helped shape who I am today. It made me appreciate the opportunities I have been given and reinforced the importance of staying grateful, working hard, and never taking any part of this journey for granted.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Today, I am the founder and creator behind Stark Outdoors, an outdoor media brand focused on hunting dogs, hunting, traditional archery, outdoor education, and preserving the traditions that have shaped rural America for generations. Through social media, YouTube, Patreon, podcasts, and written content, I create educational and entertaining content that reaches millions of people across the country. I am probably best known for my work with coonhounds and hunting dog training. Over the years I have built one of the largest platforms in the hunting dog space by focusing on practical education, honest experiences, and sharing both successes and failures. I enjoy helping people shorten their learning curve and avoid many of the mistakes that I made when I was getting started. What I am most proud of is the community that has been built around Stark Outdoors. Every day I hear from people who purchased their first hunting dog, introduced their kids to the outdoors, or gained the confidence to get involved in a lifestyle they had always been interested in but never knew how to begin. Knowing that my work has helped preserve traditions and create opportunities for families to spend time together outdoors is far more meaningful to me than any view count or follower number. I believe what sets me apart is authenticity. I have never tried to portray a perfect life or pretend that I have all the answers. My audience sees the successes, the mistakes, the challenges, and the lessons learned along the way. I also believe my background in education and coaching has helped me communicate complex topics in a way that is practical, understandable, and useful for everyday people. Most importantly, I remain deeply connected to the lifestyle I share. I am not documenting someone else’s experiences, I am living them. I am still hunting the same woods, training my own dogs, raising my children around these traditions, and trying to pass along the values and knowledge that were passed down to me by the generations before me. I think people recognize that connection, and it is one of the reasons they continue to support what I do.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to finding a mentor, my experience has probably been a little different than most. In many ways, I have been on this path largely on my own. There was not really a blueprint for what I wanted to build, and there were very few people, if any, in the coonhound world who had successfully combined hunting, education, content creation, and online business at the level I was pursuing. Because of that, much of what I learned came through trial and error, making mistakes, adapting, and continuing to move forward. One thing that helped me tremendously was the mindset I developed through family, sports, and coaching. I have always believed that if something is truly worth pursuing, you do not quit simply because it becomes difficult. Success was the only outcome I was willing to accept, even if it took years longer than expected. There were plenty of setbacks and obstacles along the way, but persistence often matters more than talent. Many people give up just before their efforts begin to pay off. As for networking, my advice is simple: be genuine and provide value. Too many people approach networking with the mindset of what they can get from someone else. The better approach is to focus on how you can help others, solve problems, and build real relationships. Over time, opportunities tend to come from people who trust you and respect your character. We live in a world filled with manufactured personas, artificial intelligence, and people trying to appear more successful than they really are. Being honest, professional, dependable, and authentic stands out more today than ever before. Your reputation becomes your resume, and if people know they can trust you, that opens doors that no amount of networking tactics ever will.
