Daily Inspiration: Meet Cassandra McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra McKinney.

Hi Cassandra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story began when my dad bought me my very first DSLR camera after I graduated. Photography had always been something I loved, I was the kid carrying a point and shoot camera everywhere, constantly taking photos of my friends and documenting memories.
Once I got my “big girl” camera, I started photographing friends, their children, and their growing families. At the same time, I was determined to learn everything I could about wedding photography. I began by assisting photographers for free and working as a third photographer just to gain experience. Eventually, I started getting hired as a second photographer and was able to learn from some incredibly talented professionals along the way.
In those early years, I was juggling college, two jobs, and photography while trying to build my portfolio and gain as much hands on experience as possible. I even reached out to some well known photographers in the Cincinnati area hoping for opportunities, but at the time my experience level wasn’t quite where it needed to be. Looking back, those setbacks motivated me to work even harder.
Everything changed when I was asked to photograph my first wedding on my own. I took a leap of faith, said yes, and never looked back. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a thriving business. I officially launched my photography journey in 2016, and after years of hard work and growth, I left my full time job in October 2021 to pursue photography full time.
Today, I am the owner of Cassandra Janina Photography, where I have the privilege of documenting weddings, families, and some of life’s most meaningful moments. Over the years, I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and countless families, but what means the most to me is preserving memories that will be treasured for generations. Alongside growing my business, I’ve also been raising four beautiful children with my husband, and that experience has only deepened my appreciation for the value of photographs and the stories they tell.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. While I’m incredibly grateful for where my business is today, the road to get here was far from smooth.
When I first started, I faced a lot of rejection and self doubt. There were photographers I looked up to who wouldn’t hire me as a second photographer because I simply didn’t have enough experience yet. At the time, that was discouraging, but looking back, it pushed me to work harder, gain more experience, and prove to myself that I was capable.
One of the biggest challenges was learning how to run a business. Photography and business are two very different skill sets, and I had to teach myself everything from marketing and client communication to contracts, finances, and workflow management. There wasn’t a roadmap, I was learning through trial and error while trying to grow a sustainable business.
At the same time, I was balancing college, working multiple jobs, and building my photography business on the side. Later, I was working full time while continuing to photograph weddings and sessions on evenings and weekends. As my business grew, so did my responsibilities at home. My husband and I were also building our family, and learning how to balance entrepreneurship and motherhood has been one of the most rewarding and challenging parts of this journey.
There were plenty of moments when I questioned whether I could do it all, but every obstacle taught me something valuable. The setbacks helped me develop resilience, confidence, and a strong work ethic. Today, when I look back at those difficult seasons, I’m grateful for them because they played a huge role in shaping both the business owner and photographer I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner and lead photographer behind Cassandra Janina Photography, based in Dayton, Ohio. I specialize in weddings, families, newborns, and motherhood photography, with a focus on creating timeless, authentic images that tell a story. While I photograph a variety of milestones, weddings hold a special place in my heart because they combine so many of the things I love most such as storytelling, emotion, relationships, and preserving memories that will be treasured for generations.
I am known for my true to color editing style, my ability to blend candid moments with gently guided portraits, and for creating an experience that feels relaxed and enjoyable for my clients. Many of my clients tell me that one of my greatest strengths is helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera. My goal is never to force moments but to create an environment where genuine connection and emotion can naturally unfold.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Being invited into some of the most important moments of a family’s life from engagements and weddings to maternity sessions, newborn photos, and growing families is something I never take for granted. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of documenting hundreds of weddings and countless family milestones, and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing clients return year after year.
I believe what sets me apart is the combination of experience, personal connection, and service. With nearly a decade in the industry, I bring a calm and organized presence to every session and wedding day. I help couples build timelines, offer guidance throughout the planning process, assist families with wardrobe styling, and genuinely invest in my clients long before and after the photos are delivered.
As a wife and mother of four, I also understand firsthand how quickly life changes and how important photographs become over time. That perspective influences everything I do. For me, photography isn’t just about creating beautiful images, it’s about preserving memories, relationships, and stories that will only become more meaningful with each passing year.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would definitely say I’ve taken some major risks throughout my journey, but I’ve learned that growth often happens when you’re willing to step outside of your comfort zone.
One of the biggest risks I ever took was saying yes to photographing my first wedding on my own. Up until that point, I had assisted and second shot weddings, but leading a wedding day by myself felt like a huge responsibility. I remember being nervous, but I also knew that if I wanted to grow, I had to trust myself and take the opportunity. That decision ended up changing the entire trajectory of my career.
Another major risk was leaving my stable full time job in October 2021 to pursue photography full time. By that point, my business had grown significantly, but walking away from the security of a regular paycheck was still incredibly scary, especially as a wife and mother. There are a lot of unknowns that come with entrepreneurship, and no guarantees of success. But I believed in what I had built and trusted that if I continued to work hard and serve my clients well, the business would continue to grow.
My perspective on risk has evolved over the years. I don’t think of myself as someone who takes reckless risks. Instead, I believe in taking calculated risks and doing the work, preparing as much as possible, and then having the courage to move forward even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. Every meaningful milestone in my business has come from taking a chance on myself before I felt completely ready.
Looking back, some of my biggest opportunities came from moments that felt uncertain at the time. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone. Sometimes you have to trust your abilities, embrace the unknown, and take the leap.
