Inspiring Conversations with Justin Nawman of Rival Jiu-Jitsu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Nawman.

Justin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been in law enforcement for over 17 years, and throughout my career I developed a strong interest in martial arts because of the discipline, structure, and mindset it builds. I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a way to gain confidence and develop skills without having to rely solely on my duty belt. Over time, BJJ became more than just training — it became a passion and a way to serve others.
When I started my business, my goal was to create something Springfield, Ohio had never seen before: a strong, positive culture built around like-minded people coming together through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I wanted to build an environment where people could strengthen not only their skills, but also the bonds and relationships within the community.
A major part of that mission has been supporting first responders who may not receive enough hands-on defensive training within their agencies. I wanted to provide a place where they could develop practical skills that could potentially save their lives in real-world situations.
I’m also passionate about helping children grow in confidence, develop discipline, and learn how to handle challenges such as bullying. Being able to empower kids and positively impact lives through martial arts is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When it came to building the business, it was far from a smooth road. There were many challenges and a lot of skills I had to learn along the way, including marketing, accounting, website design, communication, and teaching. In the beginning, these were all areas I struggled with because they were completely new to me.
Over time, through persistence, experience, and great mentorship from others in the community, I was able to grow and develop those skill sets. Those challenges helped shape both me and the business into what they are today, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come.

We’ve been impressed with Rival Jiu-Jitsu , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

The academy also emphasizes mentorship, character development, self-confidence, and creating positive relationships through martial arts training. Their mission is centered on helping people “become the best version of themselves” both on and off the mats.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The advice I would give is to create a business that you are truly passionate about, because when you love what you do, it never really feels like work. It’s important to stay persistent, be patient through the challenges, and always be willing to evolve and learn along the way.
I’ve also learned that there is never a “perfect” time to start a business. If you keep waiting for the right moment, you may never begin. Sometimes you simply have to take the leap, trust the process, and go for it.
