Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Griffith.
Hi Angela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Back in Dark Ages when I was in school, Good Girls™️ from Small Towns™️ did NOT go to school to become sex coaches – they got their MRS degrees (if you know, you know). Being a Good Girl™️ from a Small Town™️, I did what was expected: I graduated with degrees in Religion and Psychology, and got the MRS a few short weeks after graduation by getting married.
However, I remained fascinated with human sexuality and religion, and continued to study everything I could get my hands on.
After having my first child, I joined an international online women’s ministry. I was eventually asked to join the leadership team for the ministry, in part, because of the wisdom I brought to conversations about sex and marriage.
One night, while chatting with the other leaders, we were discussing what we all wanted to do when our kids were grown – as most of us were homeschooling at the time. I said I saw the damage of purity culture and obligation sex messaging in Evangelical Christianity and I wanted to be part of the change. I knew God offers us abundance in ALL areas of our lives – including sex. I figured that was years off, though.
I imagine God giggled at that conversation, because He knew in a few short months I would start being the change. A few months later, a friend tagged me into a conversation by saying, “Paging Angela, the group Sexpert.” Privately, one of the other leaders said, “Angela, that should be your TikTok handle! The Christian Sexpert!” I laughed, and ran to secure the name, not thinking I would do anything with it.
She then pointed out, “In order to really make it on TikTok you have to post 4 times a day.”
Acascuse me?
But, your girl has RAGING ADHD, so in a fit of hyperfixation I started posting, thinking I’d lose interest in a couple of weeks. God was still laughing, though.
Because I started my account in late January of that year, and by Easter I had gone viral with a video at over 5 million views. And from there things just kept escalating. I started creating digital products to support healthy sex in Christian marriage. I started offering private coaching.
At one point, I received a DM from Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts’ team, asking me to be on her podcast. I thought I was being punked, honestly. Surely there’s no way she’d found little old me? A fat homeschool mom from the Midwest? And wanted to talk to me about sex?! But she did! After I appeared on her podcast, requests for me to speak at her conference came pouring in.
A few months later I thought they were punking me again by asking me to speak at Woman Evolve – in front of 40k women. But again, God was giggling at my imposter syndrome – because I got to walk on stage and get 40k women to scream, “Clitoris” in unison!
Today, I continue to offer private coaching and speaking engagements while battling internet trolls and still homeschool my kids. My husband and I are about to celebrate 23 years of marriage, and look forward to many more.
And my heart continues to sparkle every time I get to tell you to: Go Have Good Sex.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. I exist as a fat woman on the internet, telling women their husbands will not die without sex every 3 days, and God absolutely believes in consent – even in marriage.
I often joke that I tick off half my target audience, and if I am not called a heretic or Jezebel on at least a weekly basis I’m not doing my job correctly.
The week before I recorded my podcast with Pastor Sarah, I was doing a TikTok live – and TikTok was my largest platform. A man entered my comments, wanting personal details of my intimate life. When I refused to provide those details, he mass reported my account and got me banned.
When I recorded the biggest podcast of my career, I only had about 20k followers across platforms – rather than the over 100k I’d had the week before.
I did eventually recover my account, but learned that my position is precarious – I could loose my accounts at any time.
More recently, I have been impacted by the shift in the economy. Marriage coaching is a “luxury” – and in a world where people are struggling just to put gas in their car so they can go to work, prioritizing spending money on their marriage or sex life can feel absurd. So I am currently evaluating how I can shift to accommodate this change.
We’ve been impressed with The Christian Sexpert, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Christian sex and intimacy coach. I offer private, virtual coaching to women and couples, tailoring my coaching to individual needs. The new bride coming to me to learn about her body because she was not offered a proper sex education in her conservative Christian home needs a much different coaching experience than the couple with 6 kids who are trying to learn to be more than roommates as they raise their family.
I also offer a wide variety of digital products designed to enhance the sexual and non-sexual intimacy in marriage.
Finally, I offer public speaking engagements. I cover women’s conferences, marriage conferences, retreats, and small group events, both virtually and in person.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That I cannot measure success in numbers. As a content creator, it is easy to fall into a trap of looking at numbers: Did I gain any followers this week? Loose some?
But as a creator who talks about sex, I am frequently shadow banned on the platforms – meaning my content does not get pushed out in the algorithm like other people do.
So I need to focus on the positive stories, the lives touched. In my phone’s photo album, I keep a folder of encouraging comments: The woman who told me she is going back to school to become a sex therapist because of me. The photographer who found the courage to start a boudoir studio because of my work. The wife who said her marriage changed after coaching with me. The woman who escaped an abusive marriage because I helped her realize she was not safe.
None of that can be quantified in how many followers I have or if my last video went viral.
