Exploring Life & Business with Jacob Kerekes of Superior Hydroponics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Kerekes.

Hi Jacob, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always enjoyed growing plants indoors and outside. When Cannabis became medically and then recreationally legal I really wanted to start my own commercial cultivation facility. Turns out that wasn’t in the cards. Instead I wanted to start a store that would allow me to be involved in the industry without as much of a financial investment.

Turns out this was an even better idea. I get to meet local growers daily and hear there stories. I get to meet all of the men and women involved in the commercial cultivation space in Ohio. I get to both constantly learn and pass along my accumulated knowledge to help my customers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing truly worthwhile is every truly easy. I’m a first time business owner and had zero idea of the process involved in starting your own business. In the beginning I felt like the ball in the pinball machine. Constantly bouncing around, figuring out one thing only to find out how little I actually knew.

It took longer than I anticipated, cost more than I anticipated. But it has been worth it. To make up for my lack of business acumen I have almost 3 decades of growing experience starting back in the mid 90’s.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Superior Hydroponics?
We are an indoor/outdoor garden store.

Experience is what sets the store apart from the others. Over the years I’ve learned which products actually work and which are just the latest gimmick. If I haven’t used it already I will immediately do so until I’m able to answer customers concerns and questions with actual hands on earned experience.

I’m not 100% sure I have a “brand” as a retail store. But if I do I would have to say that he willingness to go the extra mile for customer service, patience, understanding and experience are what define us as a brand.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
