Inspiring Conversations with Brenda Johnston of Gahanna Residents in Need

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Johnston.

Hi Brenda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born to Christian parents and grew up with my two sisters. At different points in our lives, our family struggled with food insecurity and housing, which gave me a firsthand understanding of what it means to live in need. My father was a pastor, so even during those difficult times, we were rooted in a spirit of giving—sharing what little we had and offering hospitality to others.

My personal journey hasn’t been without hardship. I’ve been married three times, and I’m grateful to now be in a healthy, non-abusive relationship. Through it all, I believe God and my life experiences have shaped my deep desire to serve others, ultimately leading me toward social work and service-oriented roles. I’ve always been drawn to work that gives back—helping ensure people are aware of and able to access the resources they need.

Looking back, I can see how access to resources might have changed parts of my journey—not necessarily making life easier, but different. That perspective fuels my passion today. My love for God and for others guides both what I do and how I do it.

Now, as the Executive Director of a food pantry, I have the privilege of serving individuals and families from all walks of life and cultures. It’s incredibly meaningful to be part of connecting people with the support they need. I’m also a parent of two children, who now have children of their own, which adds another layer of purpose to the work I do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. My journey includes experiences with childhood abuse and abuse within two of my marriages, both verbal and physical. There were also seasons where I navigated life as a single mother. During those times, owning my own business helped me provide and stay resilient. My faith in God, along with the steady support of my Christian family, grounded me and carried me forward. Those experiences, while difficult, have deeply shaped my perspective, my compassion, and my commitment to helping others facing hardship.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Gahanna Residents in Need?
Gahanna Residents in Need (GRIN) is a community-based food pantry dedicated to supporting individuals and families facing food insecurity. While food is at the core of what we do, our mission goes far beyond that—we strive to be a consistent, welcoming resource where people feel seen, respected, and supported.

We specialize in providing not only nutritious food, but also essential items like toiletries, cleaning supplies, period products, baby diapers, and seasonal support. We are also intentional about connecting our clients with additional resources in the community, helping bridge gaps that often go unseen.

What truly sets GRIN apart is our approach, free shopping for food. We serve everyone with dignity, compassion, and without judgment. Our pantry reflects the diversity of the community we serve, welcoming people from all walks of life and cultures. We focus on creating an environment that feels less transactional and more relational—where people know they are cared for, not just served.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of the trust we’ve built within our community. GRIN is known for consistency, heart, and a deep commitment to showing up for people in meaningful ways. Whether it’s through our daily pantry operations or large-scale events, we aim to meet people where they are and respond to real needs.

What we want readers to know is simple: GRIN is more than a food pantry. We are a place of hope, connection, and support. Our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to basic necessities—and to be treated with dignity along the way.
