Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Galay.
Hi Diana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been photographing for about 11 years now, but it really started with something simple. Growing up, photos felt like a luxury in my family, so when I finally got the chance to create that experience for someone else, it stuck with me. I borrowed a friend’s camera to take photos of my sister, and even though they were imperfect, they felt like her. That moment changed everything.
From there, I slowly built this into what it is now. What started as just wanting to capture people honestly turned into a full career documenting weddings. Over time, I’ve let go of the idea that things need to look perfect and leaned more into presence and feeling. That shift really shaped my work.
Now, I approach weddings in a more documentary way. I’m less focused on posing and more focused on noticing. The quiet moments, the in between, the way people actually are with each other. That’s what matters to me.
At the end of the day, I just want people to feel like themselves in their photos. And to have something that still feels true years from now.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, not at all.
For a long time, I was creating for other people’s approval instead of my own voice. I cared too much about what would be liked, shared, or accepted, and it pulled me away from what I actually felt drawn to. That was probably the hardest part—realizing I had built something that didn’t fully feel like me.
There’s also this pressure in the industry to constantly produce, almost like you’re a machine. That mindset never sat right with me. I’m an artist, not a factory, and learning how to slow down and create with intention instead of just keeping up has been a challenge.
Finding my voice meant unlearning a lot. Letting go of perfection, letting go of trends, and trusting that the work that feels honest will reach the right people. It’s still something I’m actively working through, but I’m much more grounded in it now.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a wedding photographer, but more than that, I document people as they actually are. I specialize in capturing the feeling of a day rather than just how it looked.
My work leans very documentary. I’m not there to manufacture moments or overly pose people. I pay attention, I watch, and I photograph what’s already happening. The quiet moments, the in between, the way people hold each other when they think no one’s looking.
I’m probably known for how my images feel. There’s a softness and honesty to them, and I blend digital and film in a way that makes galleries feel more like a collection of memories than a polished production.
What I’m most proud of is that people feel like themselves in front of me. Even the ones who say they’re awkward or uncomfortable end up settling into something real. That trust means everything to me.
What sets me apart is that I don’t treat a wedding like a photoshoot. I care more about you being present in your day than pulling you away from it. Your guests, your relationships, the energy of the room—that’s the story. I’m just there to notice it and preserve it.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most is how connected it feels. It’s a big city, but it still feels like a community. People show up for each other here, and that energy really shapes the work I create.
What I like least is that I think there’s still some hesitation around fully expressing creativity. There are so many talented artists here, but not everyone feels comfortable stepping out and sharing boldly. We have a long way to go in that sense.
But at the same time, I’m really proud of how far the city has come. You can feel it growing.
