Rising Stars: Meet Ron Harper of Mason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Harper.

Ron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After over 30 years in radio, I was laid off and was looking for my “next chapter” I was already doing voiceover projects for clients around the world. But a chance meeting with folks at SCORE introduced me to a new creative endeavor. With new smaller digital cameras being introduced, and the ease of digital editing, it was suggested that I could help small businesses tell their story through video. Some companies found that they could post videos either directly to their website or by using a YouTube Link. I bought some video equipment and started marketing myself as a solution.

My extensive experience in radio taught me how to ask the questions that would not only tell the company’s story, but also would highlight the areas that customers wanted to know before they made a purchase.

In 2020, with the COVID lockdown, I was unable to shoot on location, so I made a pivot. I used both stock video and stock photos, along with selfie-shot video to do the same kind of content. That idea was hugely successful and made that year my biggest ever.

Today, I offer both forms of production. I can shoot on location, but I can also put together those “no contact” videos as well as editing Zoom meetings and other forms of training and communication.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been up and down, but mostly very fulfilling being able to learn so much about different kinds of products and services.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in working closely with clients to find the part of their story that will resonate with customers and be a compelling addition to their sales process.

While in radio, I was trained on both demographic and psycho graphic methods of selling. Using those principles on air propelled my station to become one of the most listened to stations in the country. I wrote and produced commercials for every category, from car dealers to mom and pop shops to even a discount casket company. But while that carries over to my work now, I always tell clients that they need to do another form of content, because they want to be found in search, and nobody searches for commercials.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe that luck has played such a big role. It’s more about making the right connections and building relationships.
