Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Wray.
Hi Megan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been a part of my life. Growing up, my family really valued capturing memories, especially around the holidays. Every Christmas morning, all the dads in the family (including mine) would have their big video cameras out, recording every moment as we opened gifts, bright lights and all, even at six in the morning. We have shelves full of photo albums from our childhood, and those memories are something I have always cherished.
My dad played a huge role in shaping my love for photography. He has always invested in that passion, not just by providing equipment, but by taking the time to teach me, encourage me, and let me learn alongside him. He has always had camera gear and has photographed weddings and gatherings over the years, and I grew up with a camera in my hand, from film cameras to the early digital ones. I still remember buying my first camera myself and how proud that made me feel. Over time, I was also able to use some of my dad’s equipment, and eventually invest in my own professional gear that supports the work I do today.
For a long time, photography felt like a creative and fascinating hobby. I loved experimenting, taking detailed nature shots that no one else really noticed, and creating fun, styled moments with friends through photos and videos. After graduating high school in 2018, I had a defining moment where I realized this could be something more. That is where the name Wray 18 Photography came from, marking that season of stepping into something more intentional.
Today, I primarily focus on families, couples, and motherhood, while also enjoying weddings, branding, and product photography. My goal is to create an environment where my clients feel comfortable, relaxed, and truly themselves. I want my images to feel warm and emotional, so when people look back on them, they are reminded of a specific season of life and all the little details that come with it.
Becoming a mom has completely transformed my perspective as a photographer. It has made me more patient, more empathetic, and less focused on perfection. I now value the natural, fleeting moments even more, the ones that might not be perfectly posed but hold the most meaning.
Photography is both a creative outlet and a meaningful way for me to support my family as I navigate motherhood. Looking ahead, I would love to travel more and capture the beauty of different places, architecture, nature, and wildlife. More than anything, I am grateful to be able to preserve meaningful moments for others while continuing to grow in something I truly love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey with photography has definitely not been completely smooth. One of the biggest struggles early on was developing my own style and learning how to edit in a way that felt true to me. There were times when I felt burned out and discouraged, especially when I faced situations that were unfamiliar or uncomfortable. I struggled with insecurity and perfectionism, often feeling like my work did not match the vision I had in my head.
In those moments, I sometimes chose avoidance instead of growth, which only added to the frustration. Over the years, I have learned to work through those insecurities and trust my process. I have developed a consistent style and become much more efficient in editing, which has helped me focus on what matters most, capturing real, meaningful moments for my clients.
Even though the road has had its challenges, those experiences have made me a stronger, more confident photographer, and they have helped me appreciate the value of persistence, learning, and trusting in my own vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional photographer and the owner of Wray 18 Photography. My work centers on families, couples, motherhood, weddings, branding, and product photography. I have built my career around connection, authenticity, and producing images that tell real, meaningful stories.
Photography is more than just a business. It is a way for me to express creativity, preserve memories, and support my family while navigating motherhood. I continue to refine my craft and expand my skills through learning new techniques, exploring different photography styles, and adapting to a variety of client needs.
Ultimately, my career allows me to make a positive impact on people’s lives by capturing moments that matter, and I am deeply grateful to do what I love every day.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve always been the type of person who prefers to play it safe. I’ve struggled with insecurities and anxiety, and often doubted whether I was capable of accomplishing the things I wanted or pursuing the things I loved, even though I have big goals and ideas. Growing up, I constantly heard things like “you’re so short” or “you’re so skinny,” and messages like that made me feel like I wasn’t capable of much. But I’ve always had a stubborn streak, and when people tell me I can’t do something, it ignites a determination in me to prove them wrong.
The biggest factor that has shaped my ability to take risks is my husband. He has always been my biggest cheerleader, encouraging me to pursue whatever I love, even if it looks drastically different or requires a major change. He constantly reminds me that I am capable, and that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Because of his support, I have become more willing to step outside my comfort zone, try new things, and take chances that I might not have considered on my own.
Today, I would say I am more of a risk-taker than I used to be, but it is thoughtful and intentional. I take risks when they align with my passions and goals, and I approach them with preparation and courage, knowing I have support and belief behind me. My stubborn streak, combined with encouragement and self-belief, helps me move forward even when fear or doubt shows up.
