Today we’d like to introduce you to Zack Humphreys.
Hi Zack, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I come from pretty humble beginnings, and a lot of my early life shaped who I am today. Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of money, and I was bullied, which pushed me to develop a thick skin early on. Instead of letting that define me in a negative way, it led me toward health and fitness as a way to build confidence, discipline, and control over my life. That became one of the first major turning points for me.
I started my dog training business first, originally as a way to create income and build something of my own. At the time, my long-term goal was to eventually own my own gym, and I saw entrepreneurship as the path to get there. What I didn’t expect was how much I would genuinely enjoy dog training and how naturally it would come to me. I found that I had a strong ability to understand dog behavior and communicate that clearly to owners, which led to real, lasting results.
As I continued to grow, I was fortunate to have mentors who saw potential in me and took me under their wing. They didn’t quit on me, and they helped teach me the lessons, mindset, and discipline I needed to pursue the path I was on. The combination of my upbringing, my focus on self-improvement through fitness, and the guidance from those mentors played a huge role in shaping both me and my businesses.
I built Perfected Canine Obedience from the ground up, focusing on real transformations—especially with dogs that had behavioral issues. Over time, that grew into structured programs, including board-and-train services, and eventually expanded into a doggy daycare as well. Creating a space where dogs can be trained, socialized, and thrive has been a major part of that journey.
Today, I own three businesses across dog training, dog daycare, and fitness, and I’ve also spent time building in the stock market with a focus on long-term income and financial independence. Every step has come from staying consistent, continuing to learn, and reinvesting into both myself and what I’m building.
What started as a way to reach one goal ended up opening doors I didn’t expect. I’ve found a real passion in helping dogs and their owners build better relationships, and I’m continuing to grow while still working toward that original vision of one day owning my own gym. None of it would have been possible without the people who took a chance on me and helped guide me along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been a lot of challenges along the way, both in business and in life, that tested me in ways I didn’t expect.
On the business side, I’ve dealt with difficult clients, sudden losses of income sources, and times where bills were stacking up without enough clients coming in to comfortably cover them. Those moments force you to adapt quickly, stay disciplined, and figure things out without excuses.
At the same time, I’ve also faced some major personal challenges. I’ve gone through serious injuries, including breaking my back and tearing the meniscus in both of my knees, which made it difficult to work at times and forced me to slow down when I didn’t want to. I also lost my grandfather, who was a huge part of my life and someone who helped keep me from becoming homeless when I was younger. That was one of the hardest moments I’ve had to go through.
As difficult as those experiences were, they played a big role in shaping my mindset. They taught me resilience, patience, and how to keep moving forward even when things aren’t going your way. I’ve learned that setbacks are part of the process, and how you respond to them is what ultimately defines your path.
Looking back, I wouldn’t say I’m grateful for the hardships themselves, but I am grateful for who they forced me to become. They’ve made me stronger as a business owner and as a person, and they’ve given me a level of perspective that I carry with me in everything I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of Perfected canine obedience . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My main business is Perfected Canine Obedience, a dog training company focused on transforming dogs with behavioral issues into well-mannered, reliable companions while also educating owners so the results actually last long-term.
We specialize in real-world obedience and behavior modification—things like reactivity, leash pulling, lack of structure, and dogs that owners feel like they “can’t control.” A big part of what we do is board-and-train programs where dogs are placed in a structured environment and taught clear expectations, but just as importantly, we work closely with owners so they understand how to maintain that structure once the dog goes home.
We’ve also expanded into a doggy daycare, which allows us to provide a safe, controlled environment for dogs to socialize and stay active while still reinforcing good behavior and structure. That combination of training and structured care is something we take a lot of pride in.
What sets us apart is that we don’t just focus on obedience commands—we focus on behavior change and lifestyle structure. A lot of training stops at “the dog listens in a controlled setting,” but our goal is for the dog to be reliable in real-life environments with real distractions. We also put a strong emphasis on owner education, because long-term success depends just as much on the human side of the equation as it does the dog.
On the brand side, I’m most proud of the transformations we’re able to create—not just in the dogs, but in the owners’ confidence and relationship with their dogs. Seeing a frustrated owner go from overwhelmed to in control and enjoying their dog again is the most rewarding part of what we do.
At its core, the brand is built on structure, communication, and consistency. My goal is for people to understand that we’re not just a training service—we’re a long-term solution for people who want a better life with their dog.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would say always stay a student and realize you can learn something from anyone. Second stay cheap as cheap as possible on everything except for investing into your business. Third always be there for the people who were there for you from the beginning and always try to make sure they’re taken care of to the best of your ability and fourth, always be the hardest worker in the room, fifth always put your people first they’re the reason you’re able to take time off or leave for a bit I’ll always throw my employees deals or bonuses within reason whenever I’m able to.
