Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Wayda.
Hi Jackie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my Massage Therapy journey by receiving a massage and thinking it would be great to have a job that helps people and makes them feel good. I received my Massage Therapy License in 1994 from the Ohio State Medical Board. I opened up a small office in Hinckley, Ohio, my home town. I had the good fortune to learn from many of the masters in the field at the time like Paul St. John’s 6 workshop Neuromuscular therapies and Dr. Myk Hungerford ‘s school of Sports Massage in California amongst others. The more I learned the busier I got. I completed Structural Integration training ( Fascial work) and my business really started booming. I moved to a bigger office space and hired two therapists. I then added Craniosacral Therapy, the Biodynamic model and continued to grow.
There are so many knowledgeable teachers out there and so much to learn about the body and how it functions (or doesn’t) that I am obsessed with educating myself with as much as I can. The old adage is true ” The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know!” This field is truly infinite and you meet and get the opportunity to work on/with so many wonderful people who actually appreciate what you can do to improve their quality of life and keep them moving! I am now employ 4 therapists and am busier than I have ever been. I am so grateful for the opportunity to do what I do and meet so many others interested in healthy lifestyles, including people I have met along the educational journey as well as clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a pretty smooth road for me thus far. The biggest struggles are dealing with the expenses of office space and finding a way to make a living while charging fair rates so clients can afford to get work on a regular basis.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’d like to think that my clients are attracted to me because I listen to them and I work with intention. I am a product of everything I have learned and even many “self help” materials that have enhanced my ability to accept myself and others. I have learned to look at the body and figure out fascial patterns that have developed through activities, injuries, or everyday repetitive use behaviors that cannot always be helped. I work actively with my clients to find strategies and solutions that can create a “new normal” more efficient and less stressful on their structures. We need to get the tension and holding patterns out of muscles and tissues that are pulling on joints. I often drop into a craniosacral move to listen to the patterning at a fluid or more cellular level. I like to think that my sessions are always individual and each time my clients see me, the session is a bit different. My options are truly limitless as long as I keep learning!!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Sometimes I like to play as hard as I work!
