Today we’d like to introduce you to Breyonna Walter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Duo Tax Services, LLP was established in December 2019 by sisters Chanique Jones and Breyonna Walter of Central Ohio. Combining their individual knowledge and expertise, they set out to build a tax firm that provides world-class service.
Duo is a full-service tax preparation company offering a wide range of financial services to both current and future clients across the United States. With physical locations in Columbus and Akron, Ohio, we also offer ALL of our services remotely.
At Duo, our mission is to deliver RELIABLE, EXPERT services at an AFFORDABLE rate, helping our clientele navigate the changing financial landscape.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
t definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road—and honestly, that’s part of what shaped Duo into what it is today.
Like many businesses, one of the biggest challenges early on was building trust. Taxes are personal, and people want to feel confident that you know what you’re doing and that their information is in good hands. Gaining that trust took time, consistency, and showing up for clients year after year.
Another challenge has been navigating the constant changes in the tax industry. Tax laws, IRS regulations, and software updates are always evolving, so staying educated and ahead of those changes is a continuous responsibility. It’s not something you can get comfortable with—you have to stay sharp.
There have also been growing pains when it comes to scaling—managing time, training others, and building systems that allow the business to run efficiently, especially during peak tax season. Balancing high client demand while still maintaining quality service can be intense.
And of course, like any entrepreneur, there have been moments of self-doubt and long hours behind the scenes that people don’t always see. But those challenges really built resilience and pushed me to create better systems, stronger client relationships, and a more solid foundation for the business.
So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road—but every obstacle has played a role in the growth of Duo Tax Services and who I am as a business owner today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Duo Tax Services is a full-service tax firm dedicated to helping individuals and business owners stay compliant, maximize their returns, and better understand their finances. We specialize in individual and business tax preparation, with a strong focus on self-employed clients, prior-year filings, and amendments—especially for those who may have fallen behind and need a clear path forward.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to education and transparency. We don’t just file taxes—we take the time to help our clients understand their numbers and make informed financial decisions. Our approach is very real, relatable, and judgment-free, which has allowed us to build strong, lasting relationships with our clients.
We’re also known for meeting clients where they are. Whether someone is filing for the first time, catching up on multiple years, or navigating business finances, we provide solutions that are both practical and strategic. In addition to tax preparation, we offer consultations and ongoing support for entrepreneurs who need guidance on managing income, deductions, and staying organized year-round.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built and the identity I’ve created as “your tax bestie.” That means being knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in every client’s success. People come to us not just for a service, but for support, clarity, and confidence.
I want readers to know that Duo Tax Services is more than just tax preparation—we’re a resource and a partner in helping you get on track, stay compliant, and build a stronger financial future.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the tax industry going through a major transformation—especially driven by technology, client expectations, and increasing complexity.
The biggest shift is definitely the rise of AI and automation. We’re already seeing tax software and even the IRS start to use AI to streamline processes, detect errors, and improve efficiency. This means a lot of the basic, data-entry side of tax preparation will become faster and more automated. But instead of replacing tax professionals, it’s actually going to raise the bar—clients will expect more strategy, guidance, and real expertise.
Another major trend is the continued growth of virtual and remote services. Since 2020, the industry has shifted heavily online, and that’s not going anywhere. Clients now expect convenience—secure portals, virtual consultations, and the ability to work with a tax professional from anywhere in the country. Firms that don’t adapt to that will fall behind.
We’re also seeing tax laws become more complex, especially with things like self-employment income, digital payments, and even cryptocurrency. At the same time, the IRS is increasing enforcement and using more advanced technology to identify errors and unfiled returns. That combination—more complexity and more oversight—means people will need knowledgeable professionals now more than ever.
Another shift is the role of the tax professional itself. It’s moving away from just “filing taxes” to more of an advisor role. With AI handling more of the routine work, tax professionals will focus more on planning, strategy, and helping clients make smarter financial decisions year-round, not just during tax season.
Lastly, there’s a growing demand for professionals who understand both tax and technology. The industry is already seeing a talent gap, especially when it comes to people who can combine technical tax knowledge with digital tools and data analysis.
Overall, the industry is becoming more tech-driven, more client-focused, and more strategy-based. The firms that will stand out are the ones that can combine technology with a personal touch—because even with all the automation, people still want someone they trust to guide them.
