Community Highlights: Meet Theo Mckaye of Flash Fun Events / The Bloom Bar Columbus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo Mckaye.

Hi Theo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path into this space wasn’t traditional, but it’s been very intentional.

I’ve always been drawn to experiences — how people interact, what captures attention, and what actually sticks with them after the moment is over. I originally got into the event space through photo booths, but pretty quickly realized most were being treated as an add-on instead of something that truly enhanced the event.

That shift in perspective is what led me to start FlashFun Events.

What began as a photo booth service has evolved into an experiential activation company focused on creating moments guests actually engage with — not just walk past. We don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Everything is designed around the event, the audience, and the overall experience we’re trying to create.

As things grew, I saw an opportunity to build something different but complementary, which led to Bloom Bar Columbus. That concept brings a more hands-on, interactive element — where guests create their own floral arrangements and leave with something they made. It adds a completely different layer of engagement.

Where I am today is really the result of refining that vision — moving away from transactional services and focusing on more intentional, elevated experiences.

We’re still building, still improving, and continuing to push what event experiences can look like.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — but that’s been a big part of what shaped the business.

One of the biggest challenges early on was positioning. In the event space, it’s very easy to get pulled into competing on price, and I had to make a decision pretty quickly about whether I wanted to be a volume-based business or build something more experience-driven.

Choosing the experience-driven path meant getting comfortable hearing “no” more often at first. Not every client is looking for that level of detail — but over time, that clarity started attracting the right types of events and partnerships.

Another challenge has been execution. It’s one thing for something to look good online, but it has to actually work in a live event setting. Things like guest flow, lighting, timing, and overall experience all matter, and a lot of that only comes from being in the field and constantly refining.

There’s also the reality of building while you’re still figuring things out. You’re making decisions in real time, adjusting your model, and improving as you go.

Looking back, those challenges were necessary — they forced me to be more intentional about what we’re building and how we want to show up.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
FlashFun Events is an experiential event company focused on designing interactive guest experiences for weddings, corporate events, and social celebrations. The Bloom Bar Columbus is a mobile flower bar concept that brings a hands-on, creative element to events through custom bouquet building.

Both brands are built around the same core idea — creating experiences guests don’t just see, but actively participate in.

With FlashFun Events, we specialize in elevated photo and event activations. From studio-style booths and glam experiences to fully custom concepts, everything is designed with intention. We’re known for focusing not just on how something looks, but how it functions in a live event — guest flow, lighting, throughput, and overall experience are all part of the design.

The Bloom Bar Columbus adds a different layer of interaction. It gives guests the opportunity to create something personal, while also serving as a visual focal point within the event. It’s equal parts activity, décor, and takeaway.

What sets us apart is our approach. We don’t offer one-size-fits-all packages or treat our services as add-ons. Everything is built around the event itself — the audience, the energy, and the outcome the client is trying to create.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the shift toward a more intentional, experience-driven model. We’ve moved away from being transactional and focused on building something that feels elevated, thoughtful, and consistent across every event.

At the end of the day, what we do becomes part of the event — not just something sitting off to the side. When it’s done right, it enhances the entire experience and leaves a lasting impression on guests.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I try to keep things pretty simple when it comes to resources — I’m less focused on consuming a lot and more focused on applying what actually sticks.

I spend a good amount of time listening to content around mindset, discipline, and consistency. I’ll listen to people like Gary Vaynerchuk, Motiversity, and Eric Thomas — a lot of that content reinforces the importance of showing up daily, putting in the work, and staying consistent even when things aren’t perfect.

Beyond that, most of what helps me improve comes from real-world experience. Being in the field, working events, and constantly refining based on what works and what doesn’t has probably been the biggest factor in growth.

I’ve found that execution and consistency tend to outperform information overload every time.
