Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Osting.
Hi Josh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2015 I got my first dog Odin, a few months later I got his sister Freya. They are XXL bullies. After a few months I realized I had no idea what I was doing and needed help so I reached out to a local trainer. We worked through some basic obedience training and some more serious issues I was facing with them. Odin was dog aggressive to other intact males and Freya was reactive to larger energetic dogs. This started my me down the road of dog training, first as a hobby and then helping friends. In 2021 I went to Tarheel Canine to learn the science behind what I was doing and have a better understanding of training. After I completed their Master Dog Trainer program, I move back to the area I grew up and started Exceptionally Obedient Dogs.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been some struggles. My dog Henry had Parvo as a 10-week-old puppy. He was very sick for a few weeks, and I thought I might lose him. During that time, I closed down to prevent other dogs from getting sick
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach people to communicate with their dogs and teach dogs to understand what their humans are asking. I specialize in Behavior Modification for aggressive dogs. I compete in a protection sport (Protection Sport Association (PSA)) with two of my dogs. I am also a certified decoy in that sport. The training in this gives me a unique understanding of aggressive dogs, and with this knowledge, I can better help people understand and train their dogs. The training that I offer is very personalized. When your dog stays with me, they aren’t in a big boarding facility, but are staying at my home right next to my dogs.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think the best thing I did was find a mentor. reached out to people who were doing what I wanted to be doing at a level that I wanted to be at, and learned everything I could, both good and bad. You’ll have to take risks, but knowing the pros and cons of that and having someone to ask along the way has been extremely beneficial!
