Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Bullock-Moore.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Zanesville, OH. That’s where my mom’s family is from… and she convinced my dad to move there from Columbus early in their marriage. My father is a full time pastor at my family’s church (Hands of Faith Church in Zanesville celebrating 35 years this year!)… my mom is a chemist… I have one sibling, an older sister.
My sister and I attended private school in Zanesville… and one of my favorite high school teachers, Mrs. Cathy LaPlante — who taught my junior English class — encouraged me to pursue journalism at Ohio University. That’s exactly what I did.
I graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Communications-Broadcast News. Started my career in 2012 in my hometown at WHIZ as a reporter, anchor and producer. Two years later in 2014, I came to NBC4 in Columbus as a Producer, then Traffic Anchor, Weekend Evening Anchor, and now, the position I currently hold, Weekday Afternoon Anchor. I’m coming up on 12 years at NBC4 in October of this year.
During my time at OU, I also met the man who would eventually become my husband and father of my kids, Gerald. We’ve been together since 2009, married since June of 2016.
Our son Noah was born in March of 2017, daughter Harper was born in December 2019, and our son Miles Owen was stillborn in October 2021 at 33 weeks.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
More like rocky terrain filled with craters, jagged rocks, venomous creatures and hot lava — if that helps to paint the picture.
I honestly don’t know how to summarize everything I’ve endured, individually and with my family, other than to write a novel. I’ll say it this way; from the age of five to about 25-years-old, I went through a lot. Physically, emotionally and mentally. More than a lot of people, even those very close to me, may know or realize. But it was motherhood that changed me. I know that sounds cliche, but it’s true. My first child, my son Noah, was born via emergency C-section. Looking back now, the details of his birth story seem tame, as I hemorrhaged, nearly to death, when my daughter was born prematurely nearly three years later.
But honestly, all of that pales in comparison to the stillbirth of my third child, my son Miles, in 2021 at 33 weeks gestation. I look back now and can’t believe I survived losing him.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Weekday Afternoon at NBC4 in Columbus. It was quite the journey to get to this position, but I’ve been very fortunate that God has been faithful, positioning people in the right places and opening doors for me that I’d never have been able to open myself. I’ve had a lot of different roles over the years, but in my current position, I’m the lady who sits at the desk and tells you what’s going on in our community, region, state, country, and sometimes, world.
In addition to that, though, I’ve been fortunate to lead a few franchises that I’m really proud of. My most recent is a podcast/conversation-style segment called The Mother Load. I talk with friends, coworkers and experts about all things motherhood. Whether it’s good, bad, happy, sad, or just venting. It’s a space that I like to say is not exclusively, but especially for moms. And I don’t think that’s something we see on local television right now. But it’s incredibly important that mothers, grandmothers, aunts, women feel education, empowered and heard.
It’s especially important to me in the role of my family’s non-profit organization, Miles’ Mission. We established MM in 2023, in honor of my son, after coming to realize how many families like ours are navigating the journey of child loss — but without much support or hope. I’m the Vice President and Matriarch. Of course, the organization was named after my son. We’ve done a lot of work in just a few years to provide resources to families, connect likeminded organizations, introduce legislation, and establish a memorial park in my hometown of Zanesville. Because every life matters, as we like to say.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
None. I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God’s favor. And that has been all over every aspect of my life. I truly believe I was called into my career, because it’s not something I would have chosen for myself. I’d much rather be a hermit, hanging out at home in sweatpants, binge-watching TV. But God’s favor has put me in spaces that are the complete opposite. I want to hide, but He made sure my face is on television, billboards, etc. But knowing what I’ve endured, the stories I’ve been able to tell and the people I’ve been able to connect with because of my public, very front-facing position, is why I know He ordained my steps.
